I haven't tried it; I don't know, but I'll move this to General Topics so we can find out if anyone else has.

Whatever it is, the main problem will be to get enough bandwidth after sl takes its share.

Go try to train that software.
The idea will die. _____________________

If only PC voice recognition actually worked well this would be a very cool idea. Here's an example of how bad reality is. This is a demo of Vista's built in recognition. You'd think it would be better than software others have produced in the past, but I guess not.

I have tried these things and they do work sometimes. In a way you have to learn to speak clearly so it can tell the difference. It's like how the early palm computers had you learn a new alphabet.

ViaVoice's competitor Naturally Speaking is generally found to be much better in reviews and has been for years. To the best of my knowledge Naturally Speaking is the best voice recognition available commercially in the world.
I have Naturally Speaking and a Sennheiser microphone, considered to be one of the best for use with that program for voice recognition. Performance for me has been pretty bad. I trained it a long time. I'd hoped to be able to speak forum entries and chat in SL. It didn't work out that way. It might be that I just don't speak properly, it could be that I would get better results from other microphones, it might be the air conditioner and computer fans make too much background noise. Some folks report good results. Some folks who use speech to text find out that just as one can get sore hands from typing and mousing too much, also can also strain their voice from talking to a computer for too long. _____________________
