Ordinarily I keep announcements about Snapzilla out of the General, so my apologies in advance if you feel this is misplaced but I needed more visibility for it. With the addition of the new Quick Find feature on Snapzilla which lets you now pull up images by tag, I am officially going to be launching the tag functionality on Snapzilla (it has been in limited use for about 2 months by a handful of users). Adding tags to all the images on Snapzilla is a huge undertaking, and why I am asking for feedback and assistance.
Out of 44,000 images on Snapzilla, only about 2,000 are tagged. The feedback I need is two fold - I would like to see a vote on how people feel about allowing other people to tag their pictures, and also to request assistance on the monumental undertaking of tagging the pictures on the site. If you are interested in helping out, then watch the site for information on how to tag. The more people who tag their own images, the better the site becomes.
I will be updating Snapzilla in the next day or two with more detailed information on how to tag - it can be done when sending in a picture or after the fact. Thank you for your feedback, and the continued support of the site. There are so many great images on the site, and tagging them with meaning will help ensure they aren't lost.

By tag do you mean comment?

I've always felt that tagging is an unfortunate step back into the 90's -- less human involvement in data storage and retrieval is ideal to me. Except for with images.
Computers can't examine images in any useful way, so we need people instead. With all that said, if someone doesn't like you letting others tag their images, screw them. You need as many tags and tagging opportunities as possible. As it is, most folks won't have the time or inclination to make a thorough job of it. On the other hand, a small handful of individuals have fun with that sort of thing, so to make the effort worthwhile, you need to eliminate the roadblocks involved.
Definitely a good idea, but you need a user base that's understanding of the realities of other people tagging the images. Be sure to punish those who abuse the feature and you'll be okay. Obviously only registered users would be able to tag, right?
If the outcry against global tagging permissions is too strong, then I guess you have to leave it to each person. But how effective will that be?

From: Ingrid Ingersoll By tag do you mean comment? No a tag is a word or short phrase that adds further context to the picture. For example: http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/Snapshots.aspx?type=tag&tag=christmas%20tree

I never added a tag because I never knew what it was. I would not mind others tagging my pics as long as they did a good job of it. Having someone tag it "trash" because they didnt like it would be uncool. I always search pics by person (when I do search) and never thought of searching a topic really.
I bet there are a lot of people that would like tagging as they viewed them. Maybe take some volunteers and see how they do with the project. I would say at the very least, only registered users should be considered for being able to tag others.
Good luck on it Cris. Thanks a lot for hosting Snapzilla in the first place, I know a lot of people enjoy it a lot.

I'd enjoy fellow Resis constructively contributing and tagging my Snapzilla photos to make them more accessible. I don't really do it myself, because you know what they say about how many words a picture's worth—as much, it gets rather difficult for me. Part of the joy of tagging is the social aspect, so yeah, I'm for it.

From: Ingrid Ingersoll ahh.. like a key word then? Yeah - tags are kind of like a category label and often contain info about the picture that is not available in the title or description. A good example would be this picture: http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/Snapshots.aspx?type=tag&tag=hasslehoffIt is tagged as hasslehoff, high-end collaborative builds and soft core gay porn. None of that is in the title or description, but it is all self evident when you see the picture. Yay tags!

Personally, I always search for avatar names. Not those who took the pics, but names that could be IN the pic. I don't know if that helps though.. sorry!

I'll be happy to help myself! But I can't till after January. Holidays suck for me in SL (even though great in RL)... Let me know what I can do Cris!! would really love to help!

I like the idea of tags.
Can you limit tags to a drop down menu of categories? Then I see no prob with open tagging. Someone could always submit a category they think should be included.
Otherwise how about a tagging committee. People you aprove, that agree to tag without judgement and not make categories like "crummy builds" etc.

Maybe let the poster of the picture choose whether to allow or not?

From: Hiro Pendragon Maybe let the poster of the picture choose whether to allow or not? I am leaning toward making it an opt out feature - yu can choose to turn off the ability for others to tag your pictures. It will be on by default - registered users will be able to opt out on the site.

P A predefined list of tags that would cover the scope of all the images on the site would be fairly difficult to come up with I think. I originally considered it but scrapped it in favor of open ended tagging. It does require more editorial work to watch for spelling mistakes and abuse, but it is a lot more flexible and interesting. As far as a tagging committee - the idea of giving a group of people access to tag is interesting. I may consider that as well, or a combination. The vote seems sort of split, so I am not sure exactly what to do. Right now it is set to registered users being able to tag their own pictures (and anyone can tag their own pictures when they send them in, registered or not). It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Registration allows you to edit your titles/descriptions after you submit the pictures, comment on other people's pictures, create albums of pictures, and some other features. Registration is required because your SL avatar name has to be associated with your login on the site, otherwise anyone could just go in and modify anyone else's pictures.

I voted anyone add & remove assuming that only I could remove tags that I implemented. Otherwise I'll change my vote to anyone add but not remove. It would infuriate me to spend a day adding hundreds of tags to the site just to have someone tooling through removing them on a whim.
