I got in the habit of setting an item down after I buy it, opening it, and grabbing the items inside. I did this with a genetalia item, and it ends up I shouldn't have because it wasn't in a box, and now none of the script for it because it's not inside the item. How do I put the scripts back into the item?

Another question is, why does SL require that you drop the item to get things out of it? It just seems kind-of silly.

Without trying to wear an item, how can I find out if it's just a box with the items in it, or the item itself?

Just rez the item on the group, right click and edit. Then click the content tab, and drag the scripts into it. If the thing (pun intended) is no mod, then you can't put the scripts back in. If that's the case, IM the creator and tell him/her the story of what happened. Also tell him/her that it should be mod so you can give yourself have a larger dong.

What do you mean rez it onto the -group-? Huh?? I thought groups were what you join.

Well, no matter--I wore it, right clicked it, tried putting the scripts back into it, and it didn't let me.

So, I guess I need to contact the people who made it--although I've tried that 3 times in IM and 3 times in email and they haven't gotten back to me.

Fmeh brings up a valid point that the box-on-head-loving people never seem to mention. Not that you're advocating that unfortunate right of passage here nimrod, but I think Fmeh's original post deserves discussion (and like many things, was a topic I hoped to cover at the SLCC and demonstrate an alternate user interface mock-up...un-cue broken record).

If you right-click an item in inventory to get properties, why don't we get a property sheet? Why must an item be thrown to the ground or worn to at least learn about its nature? Why do objects appear with no creator information until they are rezzed in-world?

There is honestly no good reason that an object's properties and contents couldn't be viewed directly from inventory. I'm guessing this feature isn't there because of the one-size-fits-all nature of objects in Second Life. However, I believe there have been incidents that show this isn't desired functionality. The most recent example was objects changing permission upon rez. What is the magic behind an object's rights while in inventory versus their rights once "physically" in-world?

The fact that you can't assign an image to go with a name and description like you can on a parcel is a good question, but let' just use the current system for our analysis. Take a look at the property sheet. Compare a contents box with, say, a car. Checking the root item on either in-world reveals much the same information, permissions, textures, contents and more. Much like the "Copy to Inventory" button added recently when an object is "opened" in-world, could this same functionality not exist startight from the inventory? Could a "Create in World" drag icon not be added from this dialog? There are plenty of options here and I'm sure further typing would bore everyone more than I already have.

The bottom line is I believe Fmeh has a valid point for dealing with inventory. The ability to examine contents, get information about a creator and more should all be valid exercises from inventory, as they are for notecards, textures and other "special" objects. As Linden Lab marches towards "common UI techniques" as they have mentioned, a standard set of dialog/property sheets should be on the table. The ability to edit a notecard's contents and permissions from one location like you are allowed to do with a prim should be the goal, as well as with textures/snapshots, landmarks and any object that has such interfaces. Such unification of all object, in-world or in inventory, lead to a consistent UI and easier training.

Don't try to put the scripts back in it while you're wearing it, throw it on the ground and then try to put them in. If the permissions were such that you were able to move the scripts out, you *should* be able to move them back in.
