I'm nearly complete with a small project I've been working on. It's a small HUD attatchment that will allow the user to speak a different language. That is, when you "chat", your speech will come out translated in a different (made up) language. Other folks who have the same device will automatically get the English translation. Those who don't will only see the foreign language.
The languages themselves are user-created, and very simple. This won't allow you to suddenly speak French, but you can do simply letter-substitution or random-word stuff.
For instance, I made a language called "Island", which was supposed to sound vaguely Hawaiian'ish.
a=i' b=lo c=wa etc...
So if you typed in "abc", this would get translated to "i'lowa". Other players with the attachment would see it translated back to "abc".
For the furries, I made languages called "Horse" and "Dog" and stuff, that is just a list of random words/phrases:
Neigh! *rears back* *swishes tail* etc...
So, when you type out "Hi there, how are you?" you might get:
Neigh! *swishes tail*
This could also be done to create languages like orcish, elvish, Klingon, etc. It wouldn't be an exact translation by any means, but with a longer word list, no one would really know the difference. It would LOOK like a different language.
It's just a test for now, but do you suppose there's any interest for this kind of thing?

I think there might be. If I were you, I'd get with the leaders of some of the various RP communities (Elf Clan, etc.), as well as of course the furries, and ask them about it. It could be fun, and it's certainly a clever idea. Kind of reminds me of different languages in EQ.

Any chance of an inworld location? I can't purchase from SLEX due to both my password being forgotten and my email for my account no longer existing so I can't recover the password. ;D

It's wondeful!!
I've made a woman translator:
"Go away, leave me alone. Stop botherig me or I'll report you." = "Take me. I'm yours."
It's working great! I've got ten girlfriends already. They all want me soooo bad.

Excellent idea! I've seen languages implemented in online games. One of the most fun implementations was in Star Wars Galaxies where Twi'leks used their lekku to speak amongst themselves in a body language "you only wish you could understand". Ideas like this add flavour to the world and can certainly come in handy for roleplayers. I'll mention this to my friends. Nice one! Wendel

I made the executive decision to make it so different languages are independant. If you're speaking "Horse", and I'm speaking "Island", we'll no longer understand each other.
I think this is the way it should be.
Pick one up today, or IM me in the game for a demo!

Unfortunately, I'm at work now and can't check this out for myself. I do have a question though..
Do you have a central database of some sort for the languages? Or would a custom language have to be distributed by the creator?
I.E., I'd want to make a variant of Dog to create Hyena. Would others be able to understand me, or would I ahve to give them something first?
Thanks

From: Dr Tardis "Hi, I'm <FIC of the week>" becomes "$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$ All your L$ are belong to us" The corollary to this would be a version that spoke the language of the "Second Thoughts" blog. You'd type "Hi how are you?" and it would spew out five densely-packed pages of convoluted conspiracy theories. All kidding aside, I think this product is a very clever idea. Nice job, Adman.

Thanks Languages are defined by notecards, so, yes, they'd have to be distributed. You'd create the language by creating a new notecard with the the specific language definition, and then drop it in your translator. Then, give them a copy, and they drop it in their translator, and voila! It's all explained in instructions that come with the device. Adman

Adman, looks like something is wrong with your in-world vendor...it's saying it does not have the object to give, and refunds the purchase price.
