I think they've always been mutually exclusive. Couldn't do it 1.9 anyhow.

Shiny+transparent was possible in the early 1.9.1 preview builds, but I think it had to be removed in later builds. A shame, 'cause it looked really nice.
This pretty much had to do with the decision LL made a few weeks back where they had to remove/scale down a few shaders for driver compatibility reasons. _____________________

Yep, it's been stolen. Also, somebody stole the slight specular effect that was cast upon prims in Preview. Remember shadows? Yep, that's right. stolen!!!
Thankfully, the thieves didn't get manage to get away with lights. That would've cast a large shadow across my SL. Well, it would have if the shadows hadn't have been stolen too!! ![]() |

Damn. I saw it in the early preview - and it looked great. That was one of my favorite enhancements. Now, I'll have to settle for wiggly hoochie hair. Lovely.

Also, in the preview, you could look across the ocean and see other islands. I remember when I was on the island, I looked out, and saw the mainland. I was amazed, I'm sad that didn't carry over. But c'mon, we got flexyness now!!

Yes, 1.9.1 (now 1.10) did have shiny+transparent for a while. Until 1.10.0.24 I believe.
It was removed. Other things that were removed: Shadows, most vertex shaders, the "lustrous radiance" Torley speaks of in the release notes (shading on flat objects, basically) - and specularity in addition to just a cube map on shiny. (Basically you could see the sun in the reflection of something shiny.) All of these were removed right before release. A lot of this has to do with the fact, actually, that they broke Intel Extreme graphics... (even though they're not supported), and from what I understand, some very old graphics chipsets. (GF2 MX200 et al). -- and they didn't work on Mac. Chances are we won't see these again until the general population en-masse decides to upgrade their "was $25 in 1999" video cards. The mac part I can understand, though that may change as things shift to intel macs. But SL has more users of old hardware than do many other online 'games'. So it's tough to deliver on this stuff for LL. I guarantee you that if they went forward with shiny+transparent, we'd have more people complaining about it than who wanted it. There are already people bitching and moaning over the hardware lighting that DID make it in. |
