A friend of mine recently received a gift from her in-game boyfriend. Very nice jewelry set that included a ring, bracelet, necklace and earrings. workmenship was top of the line. Unique textures perfectly lined up prims. I admire someone that spends the time to do something this well. She needed help adjusting all these items as many attachments need mild adjusting to fit there atvars shapes. So I agreed to help. She also complained of the lag she experienced while wearing it and asked if I could look into why.

Well this is where I want to make my point. After inspecting the items prim by prim I found that each stone had a texture rotating script. 90+ stones in the set. Each sparkle (particle generator script) had an open channel listen script to turn the sparkle on or off. A total of over 100 active updating and listening scripts. 100!!!!!!!! So, no wonder why she experienced LAG here, between her AO and jewelry she was a walking script bomb.

My over dramatized story has a point. Its very much the responsibilty here of the content creators to take things like this into count. In this case the detail, although very nice, is tiny and required extreme close-up to see. There is no reason why these items would not be as attractive without spinning textures. As a creator take these ideas in to count when creating your items. Every creator will have different issues to deal with So, Im asking to look at your unique designs and apply this theory.

No need to lag the poor girl out with her boyfriends well intended gift.

A few pointers that I use for my jewelry creations:

1) Although some people like the walking strobe light effect, Slow down the sparkle some. Slower particales require less.
2) Listening scripts (BLING ON/OFF) although conenient, are an open channel listening script. Maybe try giving it a channel /5 or something. In my case I use touch on/off. Still active but less a draw.
3) Thanks to LL we now have "Full Bright" try using this instead of light. Its a pain to change everything to full bright trust me with over 250 different jewelry items it took me days.
If anyone has anyother tips, Please post them here. Scriptor that may have a better handle on getting the draw down. We'd love to hear from you.

Blue, as the other infamous Burke in SL, I commend you for pointing this out.

My attachments don't usually carry that many scripts (I try to consolidate) and when I see some... ahem, blingtard walk in and I see the Time Dilation drop from .99 to .05, it's all I can do to get out of there. Or I'll patiently ask them to remove the bling before my shotgun rezzes.

Learn to cut down on sim overhead and trim down your scripts. Don't use listens except in the root prim, and for the love of Ben, If no one's around to see the script running, turn the damn things off!

Please ... please tell me the designer's name in PM. :D

Could selling these constitute attempting to pass along malicious grid-crash-ware?

*evil chuckle*

Don't just make them listen off channel, you should only need one listen in one (count em) one script. everything else may need a script but all the other scripts can work off of pure link messages.

On a related note, what's the maximum amount of prims that can be attached to an avatar? We have something like 31 attachment points (not counting HUDs), and 255 prims on a linkset, so around 31*255?
