How do I upload a picture as a snapshot? NOT texture, a snapshot?
Anyone know? I am sure I am missing something but every picture I upload becomes a texture, even if it was a picture taken with the SL camera or something edited in photoshop.
It happens reguardless of the file extension before uploading (jpg, bmp, tga, etc etc)
Please help
Thank you

You can't. There is no difference in use between Snapshots and Textures, just their origin. Taking a snapshot and uploading it saves it in the snapshop folder. Uploading an image through the file menu always places it in the Textures folder.
When building, you can place images from either (or any) folder on a prim using the texture function.

I hope you get an answer, I've never figured this out either. All my pics are textures.

I am faced with a sign which does not take textures to advertise, only snapshots
so i need to know how.
I've seen other people with snapshots of their real life pictures on the signs, so i know it is possible.
Anyone know how?

The "sign" must use LSL code to search for a snapshot object in inventory. You should try just placing a texture in its place, I can't guarantee it, but it may pick up the texture object as well.
In the long run, the easy solution is to just take a snapshot in-world of the product and uploading it from the snapshot interface. This will produce the snapshot you desire. The only feature you lose out on is the ability to play with the image in an external piece of paint software (like Photoshop) before placing it on the ad board.

Anyone know how? I don't understand the question. "Snapshots" in SL jargon means a screenshot taken from within the SL client.

From: Clubside Granville The "sign" must use LSL code to search for a snapshot object in inventory. How does one differentiate between a texture and a snapshot with LSL? I don't see a snapshot constant documented on the Wiki, but there is an INVENTORY_TEXTURE. Being able to tell them apart could be useful, but I haven't thought of anything yet. Lisa, what happened when you did try to drop a texture on the sign? I've never seen one that you couldn't use either. Who made the sign? I'd like to check them out.

I don't know of an LSL way to check for this either.
Possibly they are simply looking for a texture with the name "Snapshot".
If so - try renaming your texture to "Snapshot" - and then try sending it over.

Sorry Simon and Travis, I wasn't sure there was a way to check for a snapshot either, which is why the following sentences asked Lisa to try inserting a texture into inventory (if that is the requirement). I agree that we culd use a little more information. Could you place a little bit of the sign's instructions into your next post Lisa? I think you see there are plenty of us willing to help you solve this issue if the creator of the object hasn't.

There is simpler idea, remove snapshots. It seems most people prefer to use Print Screen (and having once misclicked Snapshot I fully agree), therefore it is a useless piece of redundant code that could be stripped out to prevent the kind of confusion that we have now.

Huh? No way! I use snapshots all the time when I'm just sending quick shots to friends in-game. If I had to print-screen, then upload--what a PITA! Just cuz I'm a geek that way. Hey, could it be just a simple misunderstanding of the instructions? Maybe the instructions for the sign say something like, "Open the sign object and drag your product snapshot to the contents window...", and Lisa is taking it literally? Lisa, please come back and tell us more. Dunno about the other guys, but my curiosity is seriously piqued as to what's happening, especially if it really WONT take textures. From: Travis Lambert Hehe - no worries, Clubside. In general, your advice is usually stellar Agreed! Clubside's posts is one of the the reasons I have such mixed feelings about the forums going away. If it weren't for contributors like Clubside, I'd be saying, "Good riddance to bad rubbish."

From: Richie Waves Im so confused.. you mean the Icon is texture and not snapshot icon? whats the difference???? you can apply snapshots as textures and use textures like snapshots... CONFUUUUSSSEDDD Howdy Richie, not sure if my sarcasm alarm is working or the batteries need a-changin'... Textures and Snapshots are identical in every way except for their icon in the inventory. You can drag them onto objects to apply them as textures. You can select them when using the Texture tab of edit mode. Snapshots are stored in the "Snapshots" folder and receive that icon when you use the in-world Snapshot feature and choose "Upload". If you instead saveto disk and later upload using the "Upload Texture..." File Menu choice, the exact same image that would have existed as a Snapshot now exists as a Texture. This is the only difference: the choice used to add an imge to your inventory. In-world Snapshot System using the "Upload" option - Creates a Snapshot Object Client File Menu "Upload Texture" option - Creates a Texture Object Thanks for the vote of confidence, Travis and Simon. Perhaps we should take a quick look at the new Knowedgebase and see if we can make any recommendation of changing the text there if needed. From: Simon Nolan Awww, dang! I was really hoping for a secret test to tell the difference. Just cuz I'm a geek that way. Actually from a non-tech perspective you could also see the value in this function. Let's say you wanted to run an in-world photo contest. If the difference could be detected with LSL you could ensure the entries were actually created in-world and not doctored for some reason (secondlife.com front page image *cough*). Instructions are the key... some signs require specific setups in inventory, others merely look for the first image object. I guess we're still waiting on Lisa...
