Hey All,

This is directed towards the academics out there: Have you ever cited a SL Parcel/Location in an article or paper? I'm doing two papers this semester and my senior thesis next semester, and I'd like to be able to cite certain regions of SL. I've got an idea of how I'll probably do a citation, but I'm curious to see if anyone's done it before.

I cite Chicago style, but if you use MLA, that's fine too.

Thanks,
CB

Field of study?

Cap'n, what field of study is this? Computer science, sociology, complexity or game theory, law & economics or something else?.

I'd be interested in any papers addressing implications of SL and particular sims as an experimental platform or demonstration of emergent order in a complex social system.

I ought cite SecondLife in a presentation about a book.

"I think John Steinbeck... would have liked SecondLife. SecondLife is a virtual world. Here, I am handing out notecards with my referral link on it"

Best bet would be to cite as an online resource, give SecondLife.com, and maybe add the inworld location to the end of the citation.

My primary field is Religious Studies, but I do some work with the Communication department as well. Most of my work this year has been on the way that computers and the internet have influenced late 20th/21st century religious expression, particularly in America, but also with India/Tibet.

I've also been doing some crossover work with Walter Ong's theory; primarily that the technology of the computer and the internet are changing the way that individuals are thinking about issues of ultimate concern.

I've thought about doing work on "The Technology of Religion" -- particularly the technologies developed that allowed religions to flourish and spread across the globe -- (i.e. the printing press, "American Civil Religion" & Radio/TV). Of course, that's a big undertaking, and I'm not all that enthusiastic about it yet. ;)

Aye, I'm thinking of citing the website as a general works cited reference, but also doing an "in-world" footnote with the secondlife:// URL.

The issue of "Can I cite an avatar's name as an author, if he/she does not want to reveal their real name?" seems fine -- much like an author choosing to publish under a pseudonym :D
