Ahern WA recreated in Hive7

Greetings,

There's a new experimental 2-d virtual world called "Hive7" that just came online last week:

http://gigaom.com/2006/03/29/hive-7-an-ajaxian-virtual-world/

You can create your own rooms and avatar using customized 2-d images. So I went ahead and created the Ahern Welcome Area!

http://www.hive7.com/Pathfinder%20Linden/AhernWA

I know many Residents like to stay "in touch" with Second Life friends during the workday from offices where it may be problematic trying to run the Second Life client. Often web-based forums and IRC rooms serve as an additional way for Residents to keep in touch.

I'm wondering if folks might find Hive7 a fun supplement to SL when it is not possible to actually be in-world. It runs in a web browser with no required plugins (all javascript), and it is possible to recreate simple "rooms" by using background snapshots from places in SL (like I did with the Ahern WA). You can even create a Hive7 avatar that looks like a 2-d version your Second Life avatar.

Has anyone here already tried it out? Created any SL-themed rooms in Hive7?

I'll be in the Hive7 Ahern WA today during my lunchtime (noon-1pm, SL-time) if anyone would like to play around with it. :)

Very nice! I get awesome FPS in here... even with all the graphics options turned on! This is definately cutting edge in hardware compatibility! ;)

Gave me a chance to test whether the interactive map on the SL homepage functioned in a "shared" mode. Unfortunately, like embedded links, it doesn't appear to work. So it's still a "pseudo" shared browser in the Hive7 Room. Bummer that.

Eep Quirk oughta pop over and have a look at their scripting language. It's object-oriented, and you can pass a list or an integer to a function.

People are down on Javascript, but it's really a nice language. Miles ahead of Java, C++, C#, or VBscript. Not real-time, of course... there's no way you could support 10,000 active javascript scripts on a single server.

So, if it gets popular, are you going to GOM them too?

How can they GOM something that's not a business in SL to begin with?

Personally, I just want to be able to make a jabber connection to SL's instant messages. How about that... set up a Jabber server and let us use firstname.lastname@jabber.secondlife.com as a JID?

GOM wasn't really a business inside SL.

Neither, for that matter, was snapzilla.

Trust me, this is what LL does. They wait for someone else to prove it out as popular and then they *GOM* you.

They know full well what they're doing. Feature missing from SL? Well, that's becaues nobody has proved it out yet.

Roam is popular? ooh! ooh! ooh! Time for P2P!

If Hive becomes popular, then they'll just low ball them with some sad sack offer and then build their own version of a 2d interface.

*yawn*

Anyway, this Hive7 thing's kinda cool. A bit like a 2D SL really. Can't think of any examples myself, but it looks like it could have some potential for some interesting things. I really like the fact that the whole thing's AJAX and doesn't need any plugins.

Interesting and fun. I even saw a couple of friends. Thanks for letting us know about this.

OK "How can you GOM something that has absolutely nothing to do with SL".

This is like complaining that SL is GOMing "Bryce 2" or "iTunes".

Wouldn't run on the latest Opera. Or the latest Firefox. Or Internet Explorer.

Odd.

Neat idea, but the Javascript seems to freeze up Maxthon on closing. Also theres like four "Shared Browsers" that take up most of the screen and seem impossible to close?

It's neat to see someone do a virtual world with AJAX, the interface is nice too. Like I said my only real problem is the Javascript hanging.

A low rez interface to SL is a huge possiblity, and Hive is a great place to prototype it and check out whether or not it is feasible.

Improving the useability of SecondLife is #1 on the list of things to do .. how do you think they're going to get those millions of people into SL .. send them all free video cards?

Wise up, folks!

If I were those Hive dudes, I'd be writing a lot of patents as of right now.

Perhaps a few people might want to try Hive again during the downtime for the next version.

Kinda scratching my head as to how this moderation thing works...

A thread refering something in SL with a link to info gets moved to resident run websites - a thread doing the exact same thing stays.

Someone took their retarded pills this morning.

Sounds like a plan. I'll be hanging out in Hive7 and will see if anyone shows up.

This will be a nice way to pass the time and keep in touch while we wait for the grid to open :)

With all due respect, recruiting people to sign up on patch day is not the best plan in the book.
