What's a clone suit? Why did you copy it?

Lol, this is the funniest thing I've read yet. We have someone copy a Star Wars thing as far as I can tell. Someone else copies their illegally copied product, and then people are only mad because he made a copy of something that already is an illegal copy. To top it all off, it is the copy of a clone. ROFLMAO! This is hilarious. *Wonders how long it will take George Lucas to come in and get the money he deserves from the people in Second Life copying his stuff.*

The clones are the storm troopers in the new Star Wars movies. The guy is from a Star Wars group. In other words it was the copy of someone's attempt to copy something owned by George Lucas. It is the copy of a clone storm trooper suit from Star Wars if I'm not mistaken. Hmm, I just noticed the whole thing got edited too. I guess he realized it was a bad to incriminate himself in the forums.

It's fair use (within limits, of course). Other than that, yes, the progression is pretty funny. That having been said, if the copying was done by hand, no problem. As you say, it's hardly an original design, so pretty much anyone who decides to make one themselves as a piece of fanart is free to do so. If it was done by a dupe script or permissions issue, however, then I hope the original poster here is as cavalier about explaining his actions the the abuse team as he was about it here.

The Highest Form of Flattery?
10-30-2005 18:58
This is likely just the tip of the iceberg. In my barely two months of being in business, I have already seen blatant imitations of my own efforts. Far beyond *any* scenario of coincidence, the evidences I've seen would be damning to even the greatest skeptic. But why would anyone bother!? There are much better designers who make a *lot* more money. It defies logic. Beyond concern for forum service terms, I'm afraid of creating de facto advertising for imitators by naming names. I might as well reveal them in New Products Classifieds under "Discount items here!!!" Needless to say I've been a bit hot under the collar about this. A few familiar names in forums have stopped by and / or purchased, and I thank you sincerely for your interest and support. West Trade Imports LTD items are *only* made by me at present, though someday I may try to affiliate with a vintage clothier. SL pays for my SL - if you like my work, please don't buy knockoffs. For the imitators, I ask only this: at least *try* to make a good knockoff. I'm relatively new at this - it's not much to ask. If any of you manage to drive me out of business, leaving me broke and busted down to a 512m plot, do it with *style* for god's sake. - Desmond Shang ...probably some of the more seasoned designers are laughing at my small experiences, after what must have happened to them as well.

True, I think the real issue never comes to be a problem until George Lucas decides that he is losing money that he could make if people didn't copy his stuff. The problem is that real life money can be made off of the intellectual property of George Lucas. It is just a matter of whether he wants to demand retribution or not. I think the only way they would be completely safe is if they didn't sell the object, or they tried to parody the object. I think the original poster may actually be more in the right, since it doesn't sound like he was selling it. In reality, I think the original creator is the one actually doing something wrong, because it sounds like he is making money off of it.

From: Chosen Few Nothing illegal about fanart. Unfortunately, George Lucas feels differently. Isn't it funny how Lucas loves to sue the ass off the very fans who make him a rich man?

While I'll bet your designs are better than mine (in a different way even).. I'd say I'm a little worried myself about restarting to put out new things (my boutique holds a hundred old items).. my work is all mine, and honestly pretty *easy* to copy if anyone wanted to. And while I won't flatter myself to say they would, I know scenarios like you describe keep me from wanting to release my new ideas.

From: Cubey Terra Unfortunately, George Lucas feels differently. Isn't it funny how Lucas loves to sue the ass off the very fans who make him a rich man? Yeah. Fox put a girl out of "business" who was creating Simpsons icons. Fox put the Alien Quake mod out of "business". It's a principle of copyright law that if you dont' protect your rights, you lose them. I'm not entirely sure whether Fox or George Lucas owns Star Wars, but I'm sure that either one would be more than happy to sue under the right circumstances. However, having said that... there's a Star Wars fan movie called "Revelations" out there. I've seen the first 5 minutes of it... interesting. So Lucas is obviously open to the idea of fan art.

I've a great Idea!

Instead of wondering wat George Lucas would do we could just invite him to secondlife.
Then when he sees all the star wars stuff in here let him react.
Instead of wat ifs n maybes it be answered.
Simple solution to an unnecessary question.
Now here is my question.
Do you have tha guts to invite him?
I garauntee he has an official site on the net for his fans to reach him.
If you do you earn all my respect otherwise stfu.
