Geez how many is that in the last couple of weeks? I appreciate they need to improve all the time but too much of a good thing? the Lindens might become their own worst enemies if they over tinker.

They've switched to a new versioning system. Expect patches every 2 weeks or so, if not more.

I really don't understand the problem ? People moan when there's no patch and moan again when there is. duh ? Me, I'm grateful to get bug fixes even if they come one at a time.

They need to rollout without having to update everything. It's really not that hard.

It's also really not that hard to download a 20 mb client and install it. We all have broadband connections, it is not that unreasonable. I would rather they focus their energies on fixing problems, and not at developing a patching system to create even more versioning nightmares for themselves.

That's tellin' 'em, champ! You got 'em right there. While they're at it, they need to make everything faster so everything loads instantly. Lord knows how, that's their damn problem to solve, isn't it?

Go get 'em, tiger!

Well.. the 5 hour downtimes will get a bit old if they're happening every two weeks.

Their server updates are a far more complex issue than client updates - as you see, they rolled out another client update today with no server update. What would you do differently about their update process? They have had rolling server updates as well which have not taken the grid offline. I imagine they use whatever method is necessary for the complexity of the code update.

As far as down time, we have become incredibly spoiled. World of Warcraft has scheduled maintenance time every week, as do other online games. On one had people bitch that SL is not being updated fast enough, then they bitch about the updates. It's a lose-lose situation.

Duh, Cris... they should be done instantly, soaked up by osmossis! Geeze. I would tell them exactly how, but it's my ALT that knows all that. I'm just a retarded patsy.

As long as the entire client is small enough to be DLed in five minutes, I have no problems with updates being every week or so. In other MMO games, it'll take a couple of hours to DL a 300MB patch, let alone the client, even on broadband. SL is lucky it doesn't have bloat like that.

Convenient, cost-effective thin client. One 10Mb download delivers persistent desktop access to Second Life. All content resides on the Second Life server grid, so that all users need on their computer is a small, easily updateable viewer.

One of the reasons they have not done release early / release often is because their update process is so painful.

I think if they can learn how to do soft rollouts, they'll find a whole new world of releases open up to them.

They'll be releases that

a) happen very often
b) don't disrupt
c) ramp up their testing so problems are caught by smaller sets of people rather than globally
