Ok, we all know about clubs in SL, but we also know that they tend to have to give out money to attract people. And there's the well known claim that "you can't sell drinks in SL". So, what I'm now thinking about is: is it possible to create a "meta-club" in SL? That is, a venue which makes the social experience within it as different from ordinary SL, as socialising in a RL club is different from ordinary RL.

Let's look at what clubs offer compared to RL:

- More open social environment in some areas. In SL, the social environment is almost completely open anyway, so an SL club can't offer this.

- Music. Exactly the same in SL as in RL. No problem.

- Dancing. IMHO SL really drops the ball on this one. People dance in clubs to express themselves, to enjoy physical sensations, or to show off. Clicking on a dance ball or dance pad doesn't achieve any of these: you're not expressing yourself because it's just a prefab dance someone else made, you're not showing off because anyone can dance just as well as you with a click, and there's no physical sensations. We can't create physical sensations but can we create something that offers more expression? Since LL can't/won't give us in-game direct control of the av armature, the only thing I can think of is some kind of light synthesizer based on movable/controllable items that produce particles? But, then again, the lag would be hideous..

- To drink. You can't sell drinks in SL.. but possibly worse, you can't get drunk. Not even a little bit drunk to make you more sociable and relaxed. Could some other change in the dynamic be implemented that would have a simliar effect?

You could have a drink that, the longer you held it and drank from it, the more likely it was to make inappropriate comments to other people, and perhaps trigger llStartAnimation("vomit";).

In such a case one could legimately say "it was the drink talking". I prefer to actually have alcohol near my computer though. That also has the effect of making SL dancing seem much more fun - very much like being drunk in RL clubs makes stupid repetitive dancing to bad music seem like a great idea.

Limitations of SL never stopped me from making a drunken asshat of myself while hanging out in the old Welcome Area in Ahearn... Sure, my av could only hold a prim object representing the beverage(s) I was consuming with abandon in RL. But I have no doubt those around me could tell what was going on -- especially as I triggered in-world playing of anims like /slurred-speech, /stumble-fall, and /lie-on-ground-laughing... ;)

Seriously, hanging out and socializing while drinking in RL didn't seem like that big a problem. You need an environment and the people in it that make others want to do the socializing part.

The Alt Club. A place where you MUST be an alt to enter. People are much more relaxed when they're anonymous.

Now that'd be cool. I'd be interested in such a club, if I were interested in clubs.
