Forums are borked, do not log out!

Kris Ritter, Willow Zander and CrystalShard Foo all report that if you log out of the forums, you will not be able to log back in, being instead redirected to the status page.

Eh, thats what people get for trying to log out and post with their alts. Nothing new here as this has happened with at least the last 3 updates

That happened to me last time. I sent an email about it - it's a bug (read: it's a feature ) If you are not cookied on the forums, you will not be able to log in.

You mean actually log out? I close my browser and leave, but I never actually log out. Is there an advantage to logging out and logging in everything Im here?

If you use a public computer to post (like work) It's a good idea to log out in case anyone else uses that computer stumbles onto the forums and decides to post as you.

I've asked this before but noone's ever answered me. Other than being afraid to openly post an opinion, is there any reason to post in the forum with more than one account? I suppose intentionally stabbing at people or posting alternate opinions to create confusion are "reasons;" but they just harken back to being afraid to publically state an honest opinion.

So I'm asking if there's any reason not based on abject fear of the other posters.

Willow got logged out due to a browser crash that killed her session or something, and couldn't get back in - and was fretting she'd have nothing to do for an hour. So, knowing that I could log in fine with either browser, I logged myself out of one to see if I could find a way back for her. But as far as I can tell, you can't, because as Eggy says, it routes you back to the status page - which has no login. So whilst the forums are fine, and you could potentially be downloading the client etc, a resident can't actually log into the site while we're on downtime.

And no, that has most definitely not been the case for the last 3 updates. And needs fixing.

Seems the whole site is set to send you to the status page, which is a good thing in so much as before it was buried and unadvertised, but it simply doesn't let you log in if you're a resident - despite the fact the site is very much up.

So if you're logged in, you're unaffected and can post. If you're not, you won't be able to log into all of Secondlife.com until they change the status page and bring the grid back online.

LOL Here I am, I saw you waving I'm just upset because I had to do actual work this morning instead of looking at the forums I've always been able to see the forums before the last update even without being logged in...weird

hmm, until they fix this "feature", what I did was save a thread from forums to my Favorites, and it's a shortcut back in. Doesn't send me to the Grid Status page, just right to the thread I've saved. It has been doing this since 1.7.x, btw, when people started saying "How come so and so is logged in and I can't get in?" because they could see a random friend or two on the Community page.

I haven't logged out of these here SL Forums in... hrmmm... I dunno?

Ordinarily I never need to log in. Even on different machines, as long as I specifically haven't chosen to log out or the browser didn't crash me out, I can stay logged into them day in day out. If Firefox ever crashes while I'm viewing the forum, then I usually have to log back in, just like Willow reported.

But I tried that myself today - both with forum threads and named pages of the site, but no dice. I guess it depends on how you were logged out, because ordinarily if you're logged out of the forum it kills your cookies and session and you would be forced back to login. It seems odd that you can get back and use the forums - I could understand a cached copy of the bookmarked page, but interesting you seem to be able to bypass a login altogether.

If you've got alts on SL and you're referring to events in SL that involve your alts, you probably don't want to blow your cover.

This reduces the question to "is there any reason to have private alts in SL", which is a whole other flame war but I can't be arsed finding the link.
