If you're using Windows right click on the my computer icon and press properties for PC information. Right click the background and press properties then settings to see video card details. That will give you the basic specs. More detailed stuff requires more digging.

Yes, I have the ripple water and its beautiful. There is no way im taking it off.
![]() I wonder if it would go away if i just redownloaded SL. Also I was thinking about doing the computer system recovery in case it has something to do with the computer itself. The one that lets us go back to a earlier date when the computer was working fine, but now i can find where to do it lol. The reason why is because sometimes SL crashes and the entire computer shuts off and restarts but this doesnt seem to happen unless SL is playing so maybe not. |

That could be an overheating issue, if your PC is in an enclosed space or agaist a wall, move it away if you can.. There was an XP update in the last few days, wondering if that could have anything to do with it, I have automatic updates switched off.. See if you move the PC out in the open if it helps.. _____________________

But its in the same place its always been.
![]() Can it be a coincidence that it starts overheating right after the update? I guess stranger things have happened. |

Well if you're using Ripple Water I suppose it could be putting more strain on your PC there-fore making it hotter.. I turned off the Ripple Water like you suggested Zap and so far it worked pretty good. I post this in hopes that others may be able to benefit from your advice just as I did. Thank you ![]() I hope LL can take a look at this and maybe find a fix for it if it is causing computers to overheat to the extend that its causing crashes. I think ill hotline it. I want my Ripple Water ![]() |

I too have the frequent crashes, my system is plenty good. I haven't detected a pattern to it yet. It has occurred in rather empty areas while not moving just chatting in an IM window, among other occurrences.

This is the General forum. Those people know better than to read the stuff in here. Yeah, no kidding. Post to something like "hotline to linden" and Philip starts forwarding links to people. I don't have permission to post there, and the ops guys have gone home, so I'll post here. Pixel shaders do tend to heat up the card more than anything else I can think of besides maybe a blow torch or a microwave or being left on the wrong side of Mercury or something. I'd be interested to know how something like DOOM 3 treats you. Heat is a nasty beast that can really ruin your day if you don't get right on top of it. I suggest picking up an extra 80mm case fan. Look for some cooling guides on-line. Today it's minor instability, but left unattended, a poorly ventilated computer can chew through hardware faster than a honey badger on catnip. Computers just don't work any more after you let the smoke out. Best of luck. |

ISTR some of those pavilion machines have really low-rated power supplies. If one of the changes that your brother made involved upgrading the graphics card, then the problem _might_ be that your power supply can't supply enough juice for the new graphics card to function when it tries to do something particularly strenuous (like, for example, render the new ripple effect on water)... those GeForce cards can be particularly power-hungry bits of hardware!
I had this problem on an old machine of mine - one particular game would cause my system to black-out and reboot whenever a particular special effect was triggered. For weeks I figured it must be a driver problem... then I read about just how power hungry the GeForce range of could be, and experimentally disconnected a couple of optical drives to take the rig's power consumption down... suddenly the game ran perfectly! So, I'd advise you to get your brother to double-check the power rating of the components inside your PC. He might have got his sums wrong... |

After awhile of playing SL, the screen would blackout and the computer would restart. After I turned off the ripple water it worked fine but now I dont want to play without the ripple water so ill tell my brother about your advice and see if he can fix it. Thank you. |
