Why is it that JUST sandboxes servers are down?

It's not just sandboxes, one of my sims is offline, has been since before the grid shutdown over the presence issue, with no explanation other than "they're working on it".
While it's only half a sim, you're welcome in my sandbox in Jizo, at least it's online as I type this.

Even the privately owned mature sandbox is showing reddish.
The Mauve sandbox seems to be ok.
Morris looks ok.
Newcomb, where there is no scripting, looks ok.
Some kind of griefing going on, maybe?

I think someone was griefing the sims, most likely they will be banned.

It appears to be entire sims that are sandboxes that are affected. The Mauve and Morrison sandboxes aren't whole sim sandboxes.
The Azure Islands sandbox sim is offline.
I believe the oldstyle Morris lookalike sandbox in Plum is ok.
