I got it to run but it ran super crappy. I uninstalled Vista after that.

I haven't installed vista myself yet. But I heard native opengl support in is not available out of the box. Basically this makes any opengl app (like SL) run in a cpu based software emulation mode and/or translated to the direct3d layer. Both Nvidia and ATI have said they will add native opengl support to their vista drivers though. I don't know if the currently available vista drivers, available through the respective website already do this.
The current nvidia driver on the nvidia website supports opengl 'for compatibility testing', usually that means it's not yet performance optimized. _____________________

I have not yet installed the new build as I am waiting for RC1, but under Beta 2, Second Life ran fine for me on a nVidia 7800 card once I installed nVidia's beta drivers for Vista.
As far as lack of native, full Open GL support on Vista, that is just not true: From Dailytech: http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3760 From Microsoft: http://blogs.msdn.com/kamvedbrat/archive/2006/02/22/537624.aspx It is up to the video card vendor to implement the new drivers - nVidia already has, I am sure that ATI will follow suit as well. _____________________

the way I see Vista right now is- Wait till it's out. Then wait 6 months to 1 year before bothering to get it.
I'm somewhat expecting it to be like Windows 98, which was re-released with a bunch of fixes as Windows 98 Second Edition. |

They will be obvously charging the same price 2 years down the line as they do at release though. Windows XP still costs the same. After buying it twice and using the CD keys up, i resorted to using pirated Keys... _____________________

Silly furry, all you have to do is call the little # you get when it says "This key has already been used" and tell Microsoft that you formatted your computer and reinstalled everything and it gave you this message. I bought XP once, three years ago. I have had six different computers since then, all using the same key. ![]() _____________________

Hmm, the Nvidia drivers work fine for me- I installed RC1 last night and SL works fine with it. Maybe ATI will release updated drivers in the next few days once RC1 gets wider release (it is going out to 6 million testers). _____________________

What I've found...
09-05-2006 20:07
Just installed Pre-RC1 and barely got SL up and running... Had to disable Desktop Composition (Either right click on the Link to SL and then properties and go to Compatibility or look in your Security Settings dialog under the Control Panel -- Look for Visual Effects -- Desktop Composition) also to get it to work with my Nvidia Card (FX 5200) I had to turn off AGP within the Second Life Preferences before you start it up... Might also work with the ATI cards... Give it a go... But it's slow so don't run fullscreen or in an overly large window... 800x600 seems to work pretty good for me... HOpe this helps...

Yeah ATI might get a driver out 2 years after Vista they are abysmal when it comes to updating drivers and fixing bugs always have been and why I wont touch ATI no matter how good the card is. _____________________

I'm really astonished anyone dares testing such spyware ![]() True- If Microsoft leaves in all the DRM crap they're talking about, I'll pass on Vista. Plus they keep pushing "graphical user interface" which is fine the way it is now. I don't need more crap running just so Windows looks "pretty". I already turned off the fancy useless coloring book look of XP & keep it as W2K & W98 looked. Seems to be the #1 question people ask me: How to turn off that ugly kid's look. |
