Hiya,

If you send someone an IM while they are offline and their messages have been capped then do you get a message back that says so?

because I've sent someone several IM's about a product that I bought off them but the contents in the box were different to what was on the sign and have received no replies yet... I was wondering if maybe their messages have been capped and mine are just not getting through...

So I wonder if you get a message or not?

Ta :)

No, they dont get the message (and you dont get a response back either saying so). It does go to email if you have that option enabled however.

Offline IM's
06-04-2006 02:29
Whenever I am offline and someone sends me IM's, they come through just fine and are stored and show up as soon as I log back in.

I have never had more than 10 or so waiting, so I do not know if there is a cap limit. But they can come through and save when you are offline, and have always for me.

Mine caps out all the time, a few times a week at least. So I love that email option definately.

Recieving IM's that were sent while one is off line seems real unpredictable and unreliable. I get some when I log on but not all. Sometimes if a person sends me 3 or 4 I get the last one but not the preceeding ones. Fortunatly I have the IM to Email option set so most of them do end up in my email inbox.

I believe the IM cap is 25. Those also include inventory drop notices, vendor sales that are set to IM, and ratings. If you've tried repeatedly to reach this person, maybe sending them a notecard, or a PM here in the forums if they have them enabled, would be a better route.

And just since we're on the subject of offline IMs...
If you're trying to IM someone who's offline, as a courtesy, keep your IMs as short and to the point as possible. I've had my IMs capped by people who send 1 word or sentance per IM, taking up 10 IMs with what could have been said in 1.

"Hello, I have a complaint about your product ***** and need to speak with you about it as soon as possible. The box is giving the wrong product. Please contact me asap."

is much more efficient than...

"Hi..."
"Are you there?"
"Ok.."
"I bought ***** from you."
"At your store in ****.."
etc etc..

You can drop them a notecard, when peeps opt to do this with me, I generally notice the note within a couple of days.

ya, that's usually what I do, I mean you pretty much have what I wrote word for word :) I only send one IM, anymore than that is just garbage really, I don't really like to send offline IM's but with crazy time zones and what not it can get pretty hard.

thanks for all the suggestions, I sent a notecard, then caught them online and sent an IM, but was ignored, so i figure that message capping isn't the problem then :p lol... ah well...

lol... time to break some thumbs...

ticks me off somewhat, but is a problem between me and the vendor so will not run screaming blue murder through the forums just yet ;)

ahem... so on back on the topic... is there anyway for me to get my IM's to go straight to my email when I'm offline and delete then themselves from sl so that messages don't get capped?
