This is getting silly. It's not just happening to me, over the last week I've seen it happen to too many threads.

Someone starts up a thread, not wildly contentious, just talking about actual SL/LL events, pondering the meaning behind them, maybe passing comment on their own viewpoint as to what's going on.
A few people reply, some with a touch of humor, some seriously, some agreeing, some offering differing viewpoints, but all in a reasonable and polite fashion - sticking to the topic. This is reasonable IMO.

Then it happens - the thread is hijacked by individuals who skillfully turn the conversation to their own agendas, bypassing the original topic completely. Certain others jump in and the thread rapidly degenerates into spiteful and completely unnecessary argument.

I'm fed up with it. I expect the other thread originators and contributors who are seeing this happen are too.

We have combat sims - is it too much to ask for 'combat forums' where these people can go practice their verbal combat skills without annoying others?

That's letting them win. If it's not possible to open a reasonable discussion then the forums might as well be closed.

I have seen this alot recently and wonder why people can be so caustic about some of the topics discussed about LL. I have to wonder if this thread wil be next.

This thread is yet another piece of evidence that the SL business model is in serious trouble.

This would be whole lot funnier if it didn't happen to have a kernal of truth in it. :(

I'm with you 100% Doc. I tried to suggest something similar to your "combat sim" style forum section (or alternatively a "high enforcement" section where people can start more peaceful threads) a few months back but people hated the idea. So like it or not, this is what we got :D

Nope Aimee, it may be what we have now, but that doesn't mean we have to put up with it in future. Squeaky wheels and all that.

Strongly related issues tho?
12-12-2005 11:27
For instance, someone starts a thread because he/she has been treated poorly by the lindens in his or her opinion. This is because he or she had signs up protesting the neighbouring group and was putting the signs on the neighbour groups property.

It is a strongly related issue to discuss why the person was protesting the neighbouring group to begin with. It may be that the original post was about being poorly treated by lindens, but if the person was actually harassing his or her neighbours then it is worthwhile to discuss that also.

I hear ya about someone making a non-political issue (a straightforward question about dwell, for example) into a political one. And when I see someone taking a cheap punch, I tend to jump into the frey and punch back. What do you think? Should cheap punches go unanswered? Should strongly related issues never be discussed?

You're just noticing this? It is something to which you eventually become inured.

Its simple, accept that you are always right. Tell everyone you are always right, and let them know howgrateful they are to have your opinion. You won't be popular, but you'll sleep easy.

This is why ever forum user needs their own forum to post new threads in so they can edit out the off topic bits :D

The most interesting hijacking I have encountered is the one where I am talking about Pinpoint Teleporting and someone says How Dare I speak for those who support Pinpoint teleporting because of my lifestyle... What does my Lifestyle have to do with anything???

Most Bizzare.
