Well this is probably more of a rant than anything else...
But could someone answer what's the point of muting someone if their IM will go to your email anyway? Not to mention, they can still give you items too. Might as well do away with the feature since it works so well. har har.

Might as well do away with the feature since it works so well. har har. yes. I've always wondered the same. It is, literally, just 'mute', but perhaps the functionality should be more about erasing a persons ability to interact with you. If I don't want to talk to you I sure as hell don't want your inventory drops or IMs. I don't even care if it tells them outright 'this will not be received cuz you're muted so nyah' (or something more official to that effect). It's not like they could IM you to protest To go a step further, it'd be nice if you could stop people truly interacting with you - like not being able to use your vendors or buy your goods. Because I've had people deliberately go buy something of mine after I muted them (and they knew it) just so they could bitch to everyone else that I wouldn't answer their support requests Maybe 'mute' and 'ban' tools should be brought together to make a more comprehensive and useful toolset. In my case, certainly, it's generally followed that people I've muted are people I've banned and vice versa. If you could select both at the same time that'd be neat too.

If I am going to wish, I am going to wish BIG.

I just didn't say anything cuz that would send the thread in a completely different spin. I'd really like to see that option - literally, "erase this person from my Second Life experience". No avatar, no push effects, no speech, no IM's, no ability to buy from you... just, they're dead to you, completely. But I can anticipate reaction to that. So lets stick to the topic

I think mute works best when it's used on other things than people, e.g. Game announcer, or any other shouting thing that fills one's screen with green spam. I never used it on anyone....but if I ever chose to do so, I would expect to be totally free of this person interfering with my SL. We should get another option to *erase* someone, I agree.

What would be even cooler is if we happen to end up on the same screen as people we dislike, their av wouldn't even show on the screen. Sometimes just seeing someone you can't stand is worse than hearing from them. As it stands now I just get as far away from the person as I can...

Mute someone and never, ever see them again.

I am so lost in these conversations. If I wanted to ban people from my land and mute them from perceived existance, I'd find another game to play and stay off The Grid All Hail The Central Grid.
I mean, why play Second Life if you don't want to be around, and interact with, people?

I mean, why play Second Life if you don't want to be around, and interact with, people? I want to meet and interact with almost everyone in SL (at least once). But there is always that 1 in a 100 person (maybe 1 in a 1000) that goes out of their way to be a pain in the butt. Are you saying I should leave SL because of that 1 person? Wouldn't it be nicer to simply block them completely from your experience?

I mean, why play Second Life if you don't want to be around, and interact with, people? I'm equally perplexed when folks make black or white statements like this. Its not a matter of interacting with people. Its the reality that there will always be a small percentage of people who are so attention starved that they thrive off of making others miserable. The most productive method of dealing with an attention griefer is to ignore them. Unfortunately, the tools to do that are scant.

From: Keiki Lemieux Yes! I would think this feature would be great. Mute someone and never, ever see them again. I think Hitler tried to come up with a similar solution. I respect that people may not like others, and I have someone that I have muted myself and banned from my land. But I don't think completely obliterating them from sight, sound, etc is an answer. Think of all the additional server overhead processing everyone's request to make others "vanish". If someone is so thin skinned that they can't be satisfied with just not hearing them talk and banning them from their land, they have RL issues that they are projecting into SL. Just ignore them.

Quite the contrary. This means less work for your client - one less avatar full of particles & prim hair to deal with. I doubt the server load from not rendering certain objects or avatars would be a perceptable gain or loss. From: someone If someone is so thin skinned that they can't be satisfied with just not hearing them talk and banning them from their land, they have RL issues that they are projecting into SL. It has nothing to do with being thin skinned. No one said that they wanted to get away from everyone. I think I only have 2 people on my mute list. The fact is, if I have gotten to the point I have used the proper tool, then the proper tool should work. It doesn't. It's broken.

Muting someone also does NOT block teleport requests.

From: Torley Torgeson Muting someone also does NOT block teleport requests. Considering that you can type in any short message you like into the text of the Teleport request before its sent, that's kinda icky

I doubt the server load from not rendering certain objects or avatars would be a perceptable gain or loss. But how do you determine what NOT to render? The person, their AV, anything associated with that person, their speech, their IMs, their shadows, their interaction with other physics related objects such as vehicles they are in, the text in teleport requests, etc. etc. Lots of decision trees to process there. I would be worried that the system would become burdened processing stacks of these directives everytime you have more than 5 people in a zone each one with specific ignore lists running.

From: Shadow Garden I think Hitler tried to come up with a similar solution. It IS what Hitler wanted though. To eradicate all of an entire race so his master race wouldn't be "polluted". I couldn't think of any one else in history who was quite so determined to eradicate others easily. *shrug* Sorry, history wasn't my strongest subject. I'm sure there are others.

Awesome Idea
12-08-2005 14:10
From: Travis Lambert Totally agree as well. The ideal 'Mute' function IMHO would stop all chat, decline all inventory, stop all sound effects that Avatar makes, stop rendering on that persons Avatar, and stop rendering on any object that individual is an owner of. Don't like your neighbors build? Mute it! I think this is an awesome idea. I would make it at different levels though. One being a more friendly level stopping chat/should effects for people who aren't really trying to grief but are annoying. Another for full mute that does all of this. I think it would even be cool to have a forced reverse-mute on the avatar/object rendering. You full-reverse-mute the Impeach Bush guy and you no longer see him or his builds AND he no longer sees you or your builds. If he ever comes back to check on his property, he'll just see empty space. He'll then know he got full-reverse-muted and know that no one around him can see his signs or care about him anymore. That could solve that problem without LL having to ban or target someone specific. HP

You know, this definitely needs to get some attention.
Last night, the harassment continued with this individual. They moved to their alt, but after muted was still able to contact and then threaten to report me for cussing him out.
Its bad enough the AR system gets abused but if the tools we are given don't work properly, what else can you do?
