I'm starting a "radio station" for my dance club only, using SAM Broadcaster. Do I have to pay for a streaming server ? They get kind of expensive. I"m afraid I know the answer already :/

Yes you do need a server, whether you use your own connection or pay for an outside service. I have found that streaming from my own machine (ages ago, not w/Sam and not in SL, w/a slower connection) was less than satisfactory. However, I have found that there are hosting services out there for a variety of prices.

When looking at rented hosting, consider the following: Do I need 24/7 broadcasting? (not access, actual air time) How many slots (listeners) do I expect to need/have?

Let's say you're only going to host 2 parties a week (4 hrs. each), and think that a maybe 40 listeners will be your maximum, that's going to be significantly less expensive than 24/7 streaming, 40 or more slots.

Hope that helps.

Oh, I don't know squat about setting up the machine for streaming from home, had a SO at the time that did it for me. :o

There are services in world yet I believe that will rent you stream time ala cart, you might want to check into that as well.
