I've been hearing a lot in game, about the possibility of a future AV update that would cost 3.2 million US dollars to create. Is this true or can any give more details?

IM me in game and I'll show you the pic I was given of the female AV.

....what?

No.

Any update to the avatar system is A) a long way off, B) surely developed in-house, C) surely based on the Poser system, and D) certainly costing less than the current net worth of Linden Lab.

Seifer, I'm curious about the source and how this 3.2 million US figure was arrived at?

Torley is such the god of SL =/

Torley is simply everywhere,
I have no clue why,
JamisonParker is sex.

I made a haiku!

Grannie Ayame would be proud ^.^

A haiku is 5-7-5... yours is 8-5-7 :)

Haikus are funny
But some can really be bad
Like mine is right here.

Haikus from Planet Watermelon have a different rhythm... something about different drummers... and phat basslines... I'll just call it GOOD! :)

The pic he was given was a rendered image that's very high quality. It looks like one of the commercial Poser models.

There's no way that the model he showed me could be used in SL at present. It's far too detailed.

Personally, I would love to see the avatar re-made, with several enhancements, (My pet peeve is the space between the breasts. We need an extra piece that stretches across the breasts... right now, too many outfits are ruined by being skin tight. And I hate the face. The face is hideous.) but there's no way we could go from the av we have now to something like the one he showed and still have any kind of decent frame rates.

My biggest AV pet peeve is that you can't change the default animations without an animation overrider. Seems so basic. I almost want to go on a "Torley Foot Shadow Campaign" about it :)

Yes!

That space makes me mad
I have complained about it
But no one has cared :(

Well, I guess you could do it with a prim and some mad texturing skills couldn't you?

The way the avatar works is pretty wierd really. There is basically a whole bunch of alpha channel layers devoted to making the the default skin which is universally unused by most in SL simply because it sucks as no matter how well you use the sliders, even a lackluster painted skin will look a gazzillion times better and a really well done skin will look scary real. Unfortunatly the tattoo layer ends up being the actual skin layer so any tattoos have to be put on the skin itself or worn as clothing. This totally blows. LL really really needs to update the avatar badly

The colors don't match
In different lights it looks bad
Might try again soon...

As far as I know this is only rumor. While we have lots of plans for upgrading the avatar I don't know of any major overhaul on the short list (next few months) or the medium list (next year) that sounds like the picture described. There is no way we would arrive at an early pricetag for such an overhaul anyway. LL likes to take smaller steps and then re-evaluate the plan, which means prioritization tends to be dynamic. Any plans for a large overhaul would be broken down into smaller pieces and the final destiny of the more remote pieces would not be clear during the early stages.

Some of the features we have kicked around the lab and that are probably on the medium list are: more generalized clothes layers (so that avatars aren't limited to just undershirt, shirt, and jacket), better animation tools, better hair, and cloth dynamics.
