I don't think they were anticipating a giant flood of cubes playing catchy tunes.

You mean, by player anticipated unanticipated problems.... Exactly...this crap happens nearly every damn update. It's like I'm watching Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech over and over and over. All LL needs is a big banner that says "Update Completed" that we can all look at for five minutes after the announcement...until the grid once again goes down for several more hours for "maintenance". |

Moan moan moan
Notice us lot in the UK don't generally moan and it's our EVENINGS i.e. peak time that gets disrupted. Tonight would have been the first time I got chance to see my sweetie in ages ... but that's life. We forgot that SL was even down over there in MSN land ... They're trying to improve SL ... and by the looks of it to sort out a fairly serious bug. This was tested - I know it was tested since I was part of the pile on test - and I've said this before to a reception of 'you don't know what you're talking about' but it is true: You can only tell what will break when it is under load. You can only tell what time something will be done, 100%, when it happens. Hence the ETA was 12. ~walks away from the barrage of comments of 'but you don't know what you're talking about' simply saying oh yes I do - I work in egaming ... and that's why I am giving this lot a break (and also going to bed). Hope it is back up for you all, soon. |

Not sure why anyone is ever surprised by this. Perhaps the notice should be changed to...
The grid will be down from 7am SL untill sometime later in the afternoon once we get the (insert issue here) that were not tested/tweaked enough to let the game come up. OR Just take the game down for 24hours on wed but they better make sure all offical methods of bitchin are removed first. ![]() Well made me get around to working on my website instead of saying.. eh I will get to it in a little bit... _____________________

perhaps they should schedual more time so that they'd have room for their 'unanticipated problems' and then! if they had none! we'd all be pleased as punch to have it back early.

Grid Was Up.... 30 minutes

Typically what happens when you let the calendar... i.e..."Have the new version ready and loaded on Wednesay !"... versus letting the development team and debuggers tell the Admin's when THEY determine the new version is thorougly tested and ready for deployment.
You get strong hints regarding where the priorities and schedules are being established when you read posts by certain Community Development Lindens whey they speak of the "usual Wednesday update"... As usual, cart ahead of the horse out on the Left Coast. |

You can only tell what will break when it is under load. You can only tell what time something will be done, 100%, when it happens. Hence the ETA was 12. As a fellow UK'er, I too suffer the lack of play time on Wednesday. However, on this occasion, it's not an "under load" problem - it's quite definitely a Linden cock-up. On the blog, there is an admission that they restarted the grid in 'test' mode rather than 'normal' mode, which could - and possibly has - completely screwed a number of things. My guess is that they're having to 'rollback' to pre-patch and do everything again, making sure they actually got it right this time. Lewis _____________________

SL itself is one gigantic transformer bug having sex with gender-unspecific bugs and orgasming juicy, moist bug babies all over the "metaverse." _____________________

Correct me if I am wrong, they said 12 noon, PST. Which would then make it 3pm, EST?
As Linden Labs is based in San Francisco, which is in California, on the PST time zone. Is this where the confusion is? - Sam _____________________

This isn't me griping, I'm British, so lateness and poor timekeeping are part of my culture ![]() It's rather amusing that they're always late - if they said 3pm, then it would take until 6pm. It's like my train to work is always 9 minutes late - consistently and exaclty 9 minutes to the second every single day without fail. So why don' they just change the timetable by 9minutes? Because then it would be another 9 minutes late. Life's like that. |

Just plan other things to do on Wednesdays. I stack up errands and chores for the day so I'm totally distracted and productive. If I don't feel like being productive I catch up on something else SL tends to rob me of: sleep. OH, and reading time
![]() The long and short is that we all know that SL needs bug fixes and waiting a month for them isn't going to make anyone happy. And most of us will admit there's more neat things we'd like to see added. Its in these forums, folks griping and moaning about bugs, about what they'd *really* like to see implemented, yet we all turn around and bitch because they have a regular update schedule and wow, things go wrong. I worked as a sys admin for 12 years. I was paid overtime to do the updates in the middle of the night on a Saturday so there'd be no downtime. Now keep in mind this was for a group of car dealerships, so if I started right after closing Saturday night, updating the proprietary servers would last right through to oh, a couple hours before they opened on Sunday morning. Unless, of course, something went wrong. Gee, that happened what? 50% of the time or more and that was, in all reality, one server operating three locations. Not a grid of however many servers the Lindens have to bring up smoothly. SL doesn't have 'closed' hours normally, so they can't bring folks in at some 'off hour' to do the updates. Its prime time for someone somewhere all the time. Frankly, I"d rather have folks fresh and awake at 'normal working hours' doing the updates than someone who is riding a caffeine wave trying to stay awake for an all nighter. Speaking as Software Engineering undergraduate, I'm glad Linden do a weekly update and don't just let all the bugs pile up for a monthly update. Remember as well, a lot of you out there (like me) aren't paying to be on SL, so stop moaning. |

I think most people forget that in real life, computers aren't like in Startrek Next Generation - you can't just yell "Computer! Do such and such a thing!" and sit back with a smug grin as it does it. There are dozens of highly qualified talented people at Linden Labs (not that I'm angling for a job or anything.....) working away meticulously going through the code line by line to impove it, and it's not easy. |

I tend to agree that this was just a cock up this time round but my argument holds water -you only find out what is wrong when you fire the beast back up for everyone. And yes exactly ... as other people have said, if you KNOW Wednesdays are the day you are not likely to have access then plan something else. My comment about seeing my sweetie was based on RL restrictions for him and me both, it being summer and both of us having a RL (yes they do exist you've just forgotten ![]() ![]() |

LOL It always amuses me, if you want to see if the train is coming in England you look down the track (20 minutes after arrival time is due). If you want to see if the train is coming in Germany you look at the clock. On time. LOL That having been said, the train analogy doesn't really apply here ... a million things can go wrong. You fix something and it naffs up something else - sometimes, something that you'd normally expect to be unbreakable. I am not talking about anything but the experience I have with our own in house development team ... EDIT: I half read your post Conan, I admit, it being 5.17am ![]() |
