Alchemic Dream, a localization and support company based in Canada, announced a partnership with Second Life developer Linden Labs. Alchemic Dream will contribute to the upcoming international version of virtual world, by localizing its contents into multiple languages. "Because Second Life hosts an international community, we find Alchemic Dreams’ multilingual support invaluable," said Robin Harper of Linden Labs. This is just silly. Somebody tell Robin I would have gladly translated SL into portuguese, spanish or french for free... or linden bucks or a date or whatever  Undoubtedly many people here would also have volunteered. IMHO the people who actually use the software would be better than some random translation company. Many products allow users to create their own language packs. I was once an English teacher and even had some professional experience... translating absolutely boring crap like printer manuals

Language problems are complex

It is not as easy as importing a language pack in my client. Multi-language means I must be able to print multi-language strings in scripting, in textures, in object names, in avatar details... TWO bytes for languages non ISO-8859 (Korean, Japanese, ...), security control for potential buffer overflows or format string attacks...
Multi-language means a massive change in the way Linden thinks about SL. they are doing right hiring a company to do this.
What I think is the only critic, is not to have started since the beginning with a multilanguage design.
