Do seated avatars lag less than standing ones?

My understanding is that avatars when seated no longer involve the simulator in doing as much work processing avatar physics. Does this mean that one can actually tell a difference in some aspect of the system's responsiveness when a large group of avatars is seated as compared to the same avatars standing?

I would think the lag is about the same, last I checked your avatars bounding box was just added to the object, meaning that everything interacts with it the same as if you are standing still ( you know that weird thing were you can stand in the air if you dont move, yea that thing).

Technically, no. Psychologically, yes.

When you are standing you are physical, and the server has to do physics calculations for your avatar.

When you are sitting on a non-physical object you are non-physical and thus the server doesn't have to do any physics calculations for your avatar.

Are these statements above true?

Actually, I think when you are standing and not moving you are non physical, hence the statement above about standing on thin air. I believe you only become physical when you move. And you still have to do collisions for non physical objects.

I think this is right, because when you stand of a platform, then delete it, it's like you're still standing on it. The moment you move, you fall, so it does sound like it enabled physics on you when you move.

So why are we encouraged to sit when are in groups at a place with theater style seating arangements instead of standing on the seats?

I am SURE that there is suppposed to be some computation benefit from having avatars seated instead of standing around ready to pounce. ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN, in fact.

Of course I might well be wrong.

I don't think this is correct. Rather than a "physical" issue, you have explained an update issue.

Do exactly as you describe (stand still) and have someone throw a large physical projectile at you...you will see that you are physical.

I think you will see that you become physical when a force is exerted on your avatar.

Because when you're standing and doing something actively... every time you turn to look at something, or otherwise shift... what happens? You move. And go briefly physical.

But if you're standing idle or away, there should be no difference between that and sitting.
