The NSA watching? A weird bug? Password stolen? I'm not sure. But lately I've been getting noticed that I've been recently online when I had not been. If someone has had similar experiences, let me know, if I'm not the only one with this issue.

I had one of my friends tell me that my alt was showing logged in, while my main was logged in, and I hadn't even logged in my alt for a few days. Very odd.

This has been the case since v1.9. Since the de-centalizion that occured in that version, its taking the sim you log out from some time to notify the central server you're no longer online. Not very fun.

Had a nice instance last week. I IM'd someone and got, 'the user is offline...', which was odd, because they WERE online earlier and being on my friends list I hadn't notice them go offline.
Anyway, a bit later I sent another IM - still offline.
About half an hour later I get an IM reply (WITHOUT them coming online) words to the effect of 'Where the hell have these been hiding?'
'Um, you were offline' Checks friends list, 'Come to that you're STILL offline'
'Can't be, I've been online for HOURS!'
'Well my friends list says you are offline'
Friend TPs in.. 'I'm not!'
Me 'Hmmm, so I see, interesting, check with another friend'
They did, and the friend had them offline too. They stayed online for another couple of hours and never registered online in that time...
So, registering offline, IMs being stored (for a while), but AV green dot still showing. Very odd!

What's really frustrating is being online but showing offline. Many times my sis is online but it show's her offline. Now I just do a mass im to her and her alt hoping that one of them is online.
YES Doc exactly (you posted while I was typing this up) it's frustrating to say the least.

Many people would like to have this feature for privacy. /me wonders if they're working on enhanced privacy features and the code is running a bit wild on them HP

There has been a problem with IM's and people showing online when offline and vice versa since before 1.9. People then suddenly show as logging in after you IM them or they IM you. I've reported it several times and have my offlines go to my email and even then I don't get them all. I don't get notification of objects given to me or the object sometimes. I also don't get most of the notifications that tell you when people log on or off.
The funny thing is when you know someone is offline and it shows them online and you look for them on the map, it shows them way way far off to the bottom left of the map out in the middle of nowhere.

We need a system somewhat like IRC has that tells the server (and all servers linked to it) when a person is there or not.
Let's say, that when you login, this generates an event on the sim you login to that you have come online, and this sends a message directly to LL hq (or the hub server, as it were) that you are indeed there. This status does not change until you hit logout (generating an event to tell the HQ that you are gone), OR if your client crashes or times out, network disconnect, whatever, the system still thinks you are there until it tries to ping you in some form, sees that you are disconnected, and generates the logoff event.
The only problem with this system is than then we'd have the IRC problem of "ghosts" (where if you abnormally disconnect, the server still shows you as online even if you reconnect and use a different nickname. the "ghost you" stays there until a certain timeout is reached with no input, at which time the server disconnects it.
Since alts are handled differently than in IRC (in IRC, you type /nick and can change your name to whatever.. that doesnt work here!), you would be unable to login until your ghost was cleared by the server.

You think that's weird, about a year ago I had a friend IM me and tell me that he was online, and not only that, but he was in the club I was currently in. Thing is, not only was he not shown to be online, he also was not visible in the club, did not show up on my scanners, and did not show up as a green dot on the map. He was on a sim that went down, and got booted to a neighboring sim without being logged off. He could see himself, could fly around and see others, but could not talk through regular chat (no one could hear him), just through IM, and no one could see him either. Despite him not showing up anywhere near me, he could tell me exactly what I was doing right when I was doing it. Talk about spooky ghost type stuff, or worse, privacy/security issues.

Rasah, that is called ghosting, and that hardly/never happens anymore. Still was wierd when it did.
I have experienced this wierd offline/online behaviour as well. A couple of times now when i'm chatting with someone in im, and they tp or cross a sim border they appear to go offline and immediately online for me.
