A HUD (Heads Up Display) is an optional wearable device. The best metaphor is the read-out displays you see in games like your health and number of remaining lives.

HUDs can be "worn" in various screen locations and give you a way to interact with the world that other users can't see (such as touching a HUD button rather than clicking on a wrist-band you might be wearing). You'll find HUDs for everything from Particle creation to Photography to avatar controlling. Many newer security devices use them as well.
