We saw several threads here from people whose accounts were hacked and their items & money taken. I jumped to the conclusion myself that they'd done something to expose themselves to risk.
But now we find out that the problem was Linden security on the SL database. "An intruder" accessed it and apparently is the one who stole from the victims.
I fully expect the intruder in question to get a visit from the FBI, but meanwhile what about the victims? Surely there is some data somewhere that at least shows their $L balance before being hacked, if not the transfer of items they may have lost?
Or will they just be S.O.L.?

It really sucks too, I mean we are talking several thousand L$ and whole inventories wiped out!! I can't believe LL wouldn't compensate SOMEHOW!! It's the very LEAST they could do!

There's no 'compensation' for the play-money in SL, according to the TOS.
Still, it'd be *helpful* of them to at least roll back inventory changes if such a thing is possible. I don't have much construction to my name but I'd still be mighty pissed if it just vanished when I have no way to create a backup in the first place. $L balance is just a number so it could be easier to restore.
That is, IF these transactions are tracked in any way or if backups are kept.

Makes me glad some of the stuff I sell is no-transfer  I feel for those people who are not able to get verification. If they are unverified because their area of the world doesn't have credit tools like the U.S., then all the $L they have was generated in world. And it'll be tough to get it back. What mystifies me is that I have a transaction record here on the secondlife.com site. Surely if someone hacked my account and passed my money to an alt, I (and the Lindens) would know exactly who it was. If they're half smart they'll sell it immediately, of course, but if nothing else an investigation should tell the Lindens how much money was stolen. How much would it jack up the economy to restore a piddling $50k or $100k L to some victims? |
