Is it possible to stream to SecondLife directly from a file on your hard drive using VLC? (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)

I'd have to poke at it, but it SAYS it can stream MPEG-4 (which runs on Quicktime in most cases). You could, in theory, stream to yourself. Two caveats tho...
- Streaming, even to yourself, might require as much CPU resources as SL's overhead + Quicktime. If you're hardcore and have a spare computer or two, you can just dedicate one pc for this. - If other people want to watch the stream, you'll need to rig port-forwarding and other things into your modem/router and have sufficent upstream bandwidth to actually serve the stream out to other people. But if anyone wants to try this, and gets results, let us know. |

My friend, Flyingroc, and I (mostly him) made a stream to SL from his mac, and it recorded his screen, so we could basicly make a mirror. It was delayed and it didn't look that great because the connection wasn't good, but it was a fun experiment.

I say if your line is strong enough there is no reason why you cn`t stream them.

Well ok then, but how do I set this up and use it? I tried streaming as HTTP, and I got SecondLife to recognize that URL, but it doesn't play anything, just a garbled screen.

Hmm. This sounds like a job for....
Stupendous Badass Burke Prefect.... if I wasn't either a) helping a bug move his couch today, or b) being forced to hock my computer by my roomate the day fedex gets an AGP card to me so I can have shiny back. If I still have this nice computer of mine when I get home after running errands, I'll try and look into it. |

What protocol to use? UDP? MMSH? RTP? I'm confused here XD
Plus it says "Enter the location of the computer to stream to" - How would I enter SecondLife in there? 0_0 |

I downloaded the VLC program in an attempt to answer this question for someone, and was not able to figure out how to get it to work.
The instructions seem simple enough, and so far as can tell, I followed them. It just didn't work. It is also a good media player, the fast forward and rewind buttons work on several videos I downloaded when they wouldn't work on Winamp, Windows Media Player, and several others. So for someone with some idle time it might be worth downloading and installing VLC and trying to get the streaming to work and reporting how to SL users, you get a nice media player as a bonus for your efforts. Here's one url with instructions. http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/29/how-to-stream-almost-anything-using-vlc/ _____________________
