*points at the link "guidelines" in the top bar* ![]() So if you wish to start a discussion about ANYTHING, here is the place to do it right? It states under CLASSIFIEDS that no discussion can take place. I guess free speech does not exist on the SL website at all. Aw well ' tis just another poke in the eye, there have been rather a lot lately. I am SERIOUSLY considering moving to a basic account taking down all my builds. People - DO NOT make anything remotely interesting to others or unique in anyway in SL. DO NOT contribute to SL in any way that will enhance it for others. It only leads to getting 50 dozen slaps in the face. No wonder so many people have left SL:/ Signed- Really tired and fed up of it all. |

Discussion Forums: Share your ideas, ask questions, debate policies, and advocate new features with other members of the community. In this case I guess the specific discussion forum you're looking for is either "General Topics" or "Sandbox" Classifieds is not the place for discussions no. _____________________

The rules pretty much amount to staying off the resmods' radar because their calls are enforced by whatever side of the bed the Linden on duty rolled out of.

I guess free speech does not exist on the SL website at all. Of course it doesn't. Why would you ever think it did? Private company, private forums. People - DO NOT make anything remotely interesting to others or unique in anyway in SL. DO NOT contribute to SL in any way that will enhance it for others. Or, you know, do. _____________________

What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven? We are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us.

I guess free speech does not exist on the SL website at all. no, it doesn't. Free speech means you can say almsot anything you want. It doesn't mean people have to let you do it on the property, website, or otherwise give you a soapbox. Try holding a 'freedom of speech' soapbox about how bad Walmart is outside a Walmart, for instance. |

The first thing to keep in mind when trying to figure out what is appropriate to post in the Second Life forum is the purpose of the forums, as stated in the Forum Guidelines, which are linked to at the top of the forum pages: "The purpose of the Second Life Forums is to promote discussion and education about Second Life." This tells you right off the bat in clear language that the forums are not intended to be used to store and display every single thing that every single user of Second Life might feel like typing. They are here as an informational adjunct to Linden Research, Inc.'s virtual reality simulation software and database system, which is called "Second Life".
The General forum has a description: "Discuss your ideas and observations about SL which are of broad interest to the community and don't fit better in another forum." There is thus no ambiguity about whether the use of the word "general" in the forum's title is intended to convey that posts may cover any topic whatsoever. Posts in the "General" forum must be "about Second Life" and must be "of broad interest to the community" and must not "fit better in another forum:". Note the use of logical AND to connect these filter clauses; posts must meet all three criteria to be appropriate for the general forum. Some of the other forums for discussion of specific aspects of Second Life, and their descriptions, are shown below: Resident-Run Websites If you have your own site about SL like a blog, social portal, or even forums, you can announce, discuss, and promote it here! Bulletin Board Here's where you can post birthday wishes, public notices, personals, make specific announcements, etc. Land and the Economy Discuss your ideas about virtual land, SL's economy, and the latest economic facts and figures here. SL In-world Political Science Discuss Resident-organized in-world governments, SL themed builds and self-governing sims SL Volunteers & Education Forums for SL Volunteer groups (Mentors, Instructors, Greeters, Live Helpers, ResMods)--all Residents welcome to discuss! SL ResMod Resident Moderators help in making the forums a better place for the entire community. SL Live Helpers Share your Live Helping tips here SL Mentors Discuss all things Mentor here SL Instructors and Educators Calling all teachers, instructors and tutors - discuss in-world education here! SL Greeters Share your Greeter tips here Real Life Meetups & Events Organizing a RL meetup or event? Please discuss and announce here! Animations Discuss techniques, ask questions about creating and using Second Life avatar animations Building Discuss techniques, ask questions about using Second Life build and edit tools Design and Textures Discuss techniques, ask questions about using Second Life clothing templates and texturing tools Event Discussion Questions, ideas, and tips for managing and hosting Second Life events. (Please do not use this forum to announce or review specific events.) Gallery Share your screenshots and art from Second Life here! Movies & Machinima A place to show off your movies made in and about SL, discuss machinima techniques, and more! Scripting Library Post scripts that you want to share Scripting Tips Discuss techniques, ask questions about using Second Life scripting tools SL Games Discuss playing and creating games in SL here Lindens Asking for Feature Feedback Where Lindens will post new threads welcoming comments and feedback on features we're considering. Zoning/Covenants/Group Empowerment For the discussion of topics relating to "zoning", “covenants” and group empowerment and the in-world focus groups meeting about these issues. Preview 1.10.0 Feature Feedback To organize, brainstorm, plan and execute testing of Second Life 1.10.0 in Preview. Let's get together and make some incredible things happen! Current Version Feature Feedback Discuss the current release version of Second Life here. Feature Suggestions Request new features or feature revisions Technical Issues Discuss technical problems and ask questions related to the underpinnings of Second Life Mac Discussion Often Mac users report different or Mac-specific SL-related technical issues - discuss 'em here Mac Universal Binary Alpha Announcements, Known Issues and discussion about the Second Life Universal Binary alpha release for Mac Intel and PowerPC Platforms. Linux Client Alpha Testers This forum is for the Alpha testers of the Second Life Linux Client to discuss their experiences So, having established that what you want to say concerns Second Life, AND is of general interest to the community, and doesn't fit into one of the other discussion forums above or any other Second Life discussion forums I overlooked, you then stop and ask yourself: "Am I just trying to slip an ad in General?" If the answer is yes you put your post in the classifieds, which have forums for Shopping , Land Sales and Rentals, Property Sales and Rentals, Special Attractions , New Products,Employment Ops & Help Wanted, Products Wanted , and Services. If you still have a post that might qualify as being appropriate to include in the General forum, you should quickly check to make sure that is doesn't violate any of the Terms of Service clauses that govern all of our our behavior while using any aspect of "the Service", such as those shown below: In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not: (i) take any action or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content that infringes or violates any third party rights; (ii) impersonate any person or entity, including, but not limited to, a Linden Lab employee, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity;.... For the sake of brevity I have only included one passage from the TOS but you should keep the entire thing in mind, and of course the entire Community Standards requirements and the entire Forum Guidelines before so much as even thinking about clicking on the Post Reply or Start New Thread buttons. Before doing something as potentially serious as posting in the Second Life forums, one might want to consult their lawyer, and it really wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion as well. Two heads, after all, are said to be better than one, though I am not absolutely sure if that saying applies to lawyers. I hope this clarifies to some degree the question about where and what the rules about posting in General forum are. If one wishes to comment on the sorry state of one aspect or another of Second Life culture, economy, etc. one could start a new thread but it might be considered good Netiquette to select one of the many hundreds or thousands of existing threads on such topics and post in there. There is a group forum for product discussion run by Francis Chung, I believe, this forum has the distinctively confusing name "The Francis Chung Fan Club". I think the idea of that forum is that sellers create a thread in that forum for discussion of their products. You might want to ask Francis if that forum would be appropriate. There is a website run by Aaron Levy for discussion of, among other things, problems with Second Life goods and services, this site is at http://www.slbbb.com/forum, the Second Life Better Business Bureau. There are at least three third party sites with forums that can be used to address segments of the Second Life user base: forums.sluniverse.com, forums.secondcitizen.com, and forums.sldrama.com. Cheers, SuezanneC ---- Addenda -------- It has just come to my attention that the United Nations Council on Safe Posting Practices recommends that anyone making a post to a forum emit a high pitched tone audible at least 10 meters in all directions immediately prior to and during the posting process and for a period of at least 30 seconds afterwards. _____________________

The first rule about General Topics is you don't talk about General Topics.

If I read you right, you're pissed because classifieds aren't for discussion... and somehow that is restricting your 'free speech'? You don't see that's a little silly? Classifieds have a specific purpose, and that purpose isn't discussion. Where is the drama in that? You can discuss something that's in classifieds, just not in classifieds themselves: "Please note the Classified Forums are Post-Only, to discuss your new Second Life creations or other topics in relation to the classified section, please use the Discussion Forums." - Jeska Linden That's what it says at the top. _____________________

Fade, you are misunderstanding. The original posting was pertaining to the GENERAL forum and it's rules NOT the classifieds forum. I am pissed NOT because things cannot be discussed in the classifieds forum, but because postings are MOVED fromt he GENERAL forum ( where things CAN be discussed) to forums where they CANNOT be discussed. SO no drama involved. My contemplating downscaling to a basic account involves a WHOLE lot more than just a general forum posting. |
