Packet Loss

Packet loss was worse the past couple weeks for me.

But since the update - my packet loss is going on at least 50% of the time. I mean, like, every other 5 seconds, there is red packet loss.

Any explanations? Anything I can do?

The only I know to combat packet loss is to lower the Bandwidth setting on the Network tab of your Preferences. The ideal scenario is for the right bar to be as high as possible without turning red and packet loss generally sitting at zero or very close to it. When you have that balance, you're in as good a shape as you can be.

You may not be happy with the resulting speed of rendering and border crossing; but it's as good as your "connection" will support at the time.

Taken from the Support Wiki:

Maximum Bandwidth:
Move this slider to the right to increase the download rate for data within Second Life. Decrease this slider to reduce download rates. Higher numbers may result in objects and avatars appearing more quickly. However, very large values may tax your computer and provide reduced performance. Residents often set this value to slightly less than their upload rate, or find the maximum value that does not result in excessive packet loss. Default value is 300.

Doesn't explain why, once again, packet loss has suddenly become a problem.

However, I will be selling "wackit moss" by the end of this week. This product is an herbal device that *guaranteed to affect packet loss if you plant enough of it on your parcel.

I'd guess that packet loss would be exacerbated by the reported caching problems, plus the general sluggishness that the grid exhibits post-update. I'm sure we're using much more concurrent bandwidth at the moment than we would under normal circumstances.

That was my guess as well.

However, I was noticing packet loss being suddenly worse in the past week or two. How come that?

Now with the 1.7, it is insane! But I'll adjust the slider and hope for improvement.
