Not 'residents', merely 'accounts opened since day 1'.

The 'active' figure is a better indication.

The fact that the online at any one time is just a few % of this seems to fly over the heads of most people who concentrate on figures instead of the reality.

I am quite certain that when I joined at the beginning of June (2 days after open registrations), that online numbers were consistently between 7,000-8,000 maximum. Lately, I have noticed 8,000+ consistently and even almost 10,000 at peak times!

I would say a jump of 25% in just 2 months of active online accounts is pretty rapid growth!

For the record, although the debate seems to be over, I would never have tried SL if it weren't free. I have never griefed anyone and I now own quite a bit of land and a shop and am starting a church with a group of other people.

My guess, and this is only my personal opinion based on my short time in SL, is that it simply will not ever happen. At least not if you are talking about 1,000,000 active users rather than just "Over 1 million accounts created to date".

I like SL, but I do not see any solid indications that the company LL or the platform SL will ever reach that potential. Not trying to be overly negative, though I know it sounds that way, that's just my opinion.

1,000,000 by the end of the year. Lots of growth during the fall and early winter.

Well, being that people can create infinite numbers of alt accounts, the 600000 figure doesn't represent RL people. 600000 could mean 10000 people playing, each with 1 main account and 59 alts (for example).
