Why is it that you can only upload 10 second .wav files? Is it a size problem? .mp3s are only what... 3 MB? How come you cannot upload them?

Because people would do exactly as you propose: Upload their MP3 collections into Second Life.
Internally, those 10-second clips are compressed into ogg vorbis format and take up about as much disk space as your average large texture -- in the range of about 100 kilobytes.
Linden labs does not have an unlimited supply of disk space, and folks are already dumping some seven million lindens worth of stuff onto the asset servers every month. That is quite a lot of stuff!

True. This is a problem i've been worried about since i first came to SL. How much disk space does LL actually have? I meen the things been here since 2002 and people upload stuff to it every day. Now that you can freely signup for a account within a couple minutes that leaves their servers having to download way more then they ever used to. I can see why the asset Servers have been failing lately.
