Despite the data being taken etc etc has anyone thought of the implications in-world of maybe thousands upon thousands of accounts not being able to get in ( either until Monday or until something is done about made up email accounts )

These accounts had no payment info - so if they had land they were renting.
How many rents are going to expire in a few weeks and no-one to come in and top them up ?
How many vendors in Mall's are going to expire without anyone to either top them up - or clean them up.

Some of these accounts may have purchased things ( possibly even expensive things ) how long before they bite the bullet and create a new account then start contacting sellers saying "err i bought this as another account - but I cant get into it anymore - can I have another one ?"

Some of them may even have been selling stuff ( even via slexchange and SLB ) - those boxes may be on rented ground ( bye bye ) , the sales ( in-world ) are getting paid into accounts that are never going to get accessed again. ( And paid for products that will no longer be supported )

( and the poor sellers are getting emails from their Jevn's etc telling them about it - and possibly even people asking for updates/fixes to items they - the sellers - cannot get to anymore )

Projects that were promised and paid for dying as people cannot get in to get their work.

I think we will be seeing the aftermath of this for quite a few months to come.

( One last thought I had -
put a note in your diary for 6 months time -
I seem to remember non-active accounts get deleted after 6 months.
In 6 months we get to see how many accounts were lost as there will be a potentially huge cull after the inactive time passes.)

( No - this is not a flame on Linden - these things unfortunately happen - I have just been reading some of the posts and it is all about CC's - identity loss etc - which got me to thinking what was lost in world, and how else is it going to impact in-there )

I already had a day old newbie message me and tell me that they could not access their other account so they wanted to ask for money. I also noted that a lot of my friends were not around tonight as a result of the security question. It was the most boring Friday in a long time. :(

Forgive my ignorance but won't the L$ exchange rate also be greatly affected by this too, with many residents cashing out before switching payment details?

There is a possibility of the L$ exchange rate being effected by this, yes. The most likely situation would be that residents would cash out everything that dosen't cover existing tier costs. Of course, this would create a massive influx of L$ in the lindex, thus greatly lowering the value of the Linden Dollar.

This is good for buyers, bad for sellers.

Now if you are normally a buyer, there could be a great profit to be earned if the value of the L$ goes down. Buy alot when it reaches what seems to be the low, which will happen when the value stops dropping at a greatly accelerated rate, and wait for the economy to rebound, which could take a few weeks. When this happens, sell what you have.

The long-term effects of this will be a rubber band effect, as people sell their L$, which lowers the value, then the market rebounds, and subsequent buyers of the re-lowered value of the L$ sell their L$ for profit as well.

... in fact, I think I will toodle on over there myself..

Not much happening on the exchange. It's been the same rate since this happened.
