Hello, i started playing SL yesterday. And i am curious about something. I dont know if this is the right board to ask this, if not i am sorry.

My question is. Lets say i have a box, and i put it on the ground. Can anyone take it from the ground with out my permission, and lets say i logged off before getting the item from the ground back to my inventory. I log in tomorrow, will i see my box there or will it be deleted from the game?

Well there are a few answers depending on the situation.
The owner of the land you placed the box on can delete it or return it to you.
Anyone you give modify rights to (and you do that using the friends button at the bottom of your screen) can basically do anything with the box... delete, take, edit, whatever.
If you log out and no one has done any of the above things to the box it will still be there and it will stay there indefinately.
However, some land owners set their land to autoreturn, which means that after a certain period of time (anywhere from 1 minute to 60 minutes I believe) the land will automatically return anything you leave out to your inventory where you'll find it in your lost and found folder.

Hope that helps :)

EDIT: Oh and welcome to the chaos that is SL. :)

Hi. Nobody can take an object that belongs to you, wherever it might be placed. If the option "Allow anyone to copy" is selected in the Objects general options, then anyone may take a copy of it, leaving the original one intact.

But (in answer to the second part of the question) - if the object isn't on land that you own or land deeded to a group that you belong to, then it can and usually will eventually be returned to your inventory - eithier automatically, or manually by the land owner. In that case it will appear in your "Lost and Found" folder in your inventory.

HTH! Good luck :)

Thanks for the answers.

If i put my box on a land that is ruled by an "evil" person and lets say i crash and cant log back in. Can he delete it instead of returning to me?

Absolutely they can. Just so you know, it's generally considered rude to rez things on other people's land for more than a few moments without permission. If you just bought something it's ok to take it out of the box there in the store, as long as you clean up after yourself.

If you are just looking for a place to play with some prims, which is a fun way to learn about them btw, I would suggest going to one of the sandboxes around SL. They are cleaned out twice a day (usually at 3am and 3pm) so you have up to twelve hours to play with prims without worrying about them being deleted. (The sandboxes give you a 5 minute and a 1 minute warning before deleting everything so you can save your work.)

If you want to learn about building go to the Ivory Tower of Primitives (use the find feature, places tab). It's a great tutorial that will take you all the way from beginner to expert with some practice.)

Have fun! :)

As far as I know, deleting items on your land just returns them to the owner. I didn't try it myself but see also this post:

Vares Solvang already suggested the Ivory Tower of Prims (look it up in "Find / Places";). And you can try the Basic Building class on New Citizens Plaza at Kuula. This class is one of the best I've ever seen.

Not a Linden, but it's a definate that if a landowner delelets your item, it simply goes to your Lost and Found folder like the Return option.

The only ways to lose an item you placed out (that I know of) are:

1) Grid/sim crashes. Darn those little 1's and 0's!!!

2) A person who has Modify Rights granted by you can delete any object of yours.

3) Though unfounded, I'd be willing to bet that Linden Labs can delete any object permanently if they felt the need. They're not going to do that on a whim, however, as they have a few thousand other things to do *Grins*.

4) You mis-clicking and deleting it yourself. *grumbles over how many times she's done this*.

Aside from that, it's permanent, or will simply be returned to you (great for when you get that "Where the HECK did I put that?!?";). As stated, some lands are set to auto-return after a few minutes, and sandboxes are reset about once a day to clear them completely. There are also scripts out there that allow landowners more control over thier auto-return.

Good rule of thumb is to know where you're building, and what the landowners rules are. Or jsut rent/buy the land and then do what you want ^.^

Welcome to Second Life!!!

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.
