Has LL sold too much land?

Is seems most sims are empty, or there might be an AV here or there. It occured to me, everyone is so spread out. I would think LL would slow the sale of new sims until the population of the current sims increase. I understand too many AVIES in an area cause lag, but when I go to a mall or telehub, it's almost spooky it's so dead.

This would be an excellent topic for a poll :) I don't know if they have over sold land but I see a lot of land for sale these days on the new continent.

I don't think so. This is because, well, I hate lag, and my home sim is right next to a completely empty "void sim", which I often fly/walk over to to test things out in...

I mean, SL is still significantly smaller than the "real" world. For now. ;)

Your best bet is finding places with apparements for cheap prices if u want stuff like that. As for land, there is never too much only how much is too much? We plan to expand as big as we can get, and this year alone there is almost as many islands as there are almost half as many sims on the main land!

I'd say... give it awhile... give it more time... the population will increase and we'll see pockets that are very dense and more spread-out country stretches. Maybe even tundra. Hehehe. :)

Malls generally won't be as crowded as offline because the shopping experience is so much faster here, and we don't have to contend with traffic. Vehicles are a false analog at times too, as they are used more for recreation than a necessity to travel long distances.

Future changes to the system will change dynamics too, i.e. we will likely see FAR DENSER clubs in 1.7, and who knows what else people will do? :)

The problem I see is as the population grows, the land is expanded twice as fast.

Which has a number of good aspects to it, because I hear new Resis complain about First Land shortages—if LL can keep ahead of those, then that's certainly one dancestep in the right direction. And if further exponential growth is coming, it's going to get harder and harder for LL to keep up so they might as well push forth now. That way, it's like a train arriving ahead of time but the passengers will appreciate it when they're late.

Also, the Linden sims I see that are "empty" are the ones that haven't been auctioned off yet, or otherwise have Protected Land on them. Where are some specific good examples you'd point to of mainland that's effectively blank that you'd like to see more development on? I want to check this out in more detail. :)

Where is your data that supports your hypothesis that the rate at which the surface area of SL is growing is greater than the rate at which the population is growing? Are you voicing a concern or do you have data?

I think what Kevn was saying (correct me if I'm wrong Kevn) is that many sims have no avs in them most of the time. Yes the land is sold and being paid for but there is no one there.

It is certainly true where I live but I like it that way.

The fact is, this problem has nothing to do with overselling of land and everything to do with a lack of interesting content in sl.

Sometimes I find it has to do with Resis being at their land only at a certain time of the day. :) Like, someone stays at home for a couple hours to tidy up, then logs off. Or someone has a house party, and it's all very transient. I've seen densities change over the course of 24 hours—that'll get more variations as diversity increases via timezones of Planet Earth. Which is really, really cool.

Nowww what would be useful is calculating sim density somehow, and track which hours are most active in which sims, and which parcels specifically. I think Ezhar Fairlight had earlier data on this but I haven't seen a more recent update. Mebbe this is a job for ROAM Search or somethin'!

Even if no one else visits a given piece of land, I reckon the owners gotta come on every now and then, with the exception of... and here's the kickstart... REALLY OLD PLACES OWNED BY LIFETIME MEMBERS! (Which also has some of the most fascinating content in SL: see Welsh, Taber, etc.)

And of course, void sims... void! :D

LL no longer introduces new land to the community. Land traders and other players do by activating an auction. LL's new policy is to add as much land as people want to bid on. For this reason, the average auction now ends at around 1000-11000 USD since if an auction bid gets too high, a player can just activate the next auction up.

As long as the inland land price is below roughly 6-8 L$/m2 it is unprofitable to activate too many new auctions. there is absolutely noone should have to pay more than 8-9 L$/m2 under this new system. the only instances where this is not the case is when a sim is sold out and a player is already established in that sim, because of the nature of the medium that requires land to be in the sim to share the prims.

instead of guessing at how much land is needed, LL leaves it to player businesses to guage that through the market value of the land.

If there is so much land for sale, I wish the people who live next to or near land that I have would stop trying to harass me into selling what I have.
