I tried to find the forum for dumb newbie questions and couldn't so I'm posting here. Is there a beginner's forum or a FAQ that addresses simple stuff like the following two questions?
One thing that doesn't make sense to me is day vs. night. In many places I can't see much detail in the dark, which would be ok if I could understand when and where it is going to be dark. Is there a way to know when it's going to be dark in a particular area, and do I have any control over it? I've tried setting the nighttime brighness all the way up and it helps a little, but to just fly around and look for cool stuff it pretty much has to be daylight for me to see enough detail.
Also, when I arrive at a place with lots of textures it can take quite a few minutes for all the detail to download. Later, after I logout and come back, sometimes the detail is already there, and other times I have to wait and wait for the same stuff to download again. I have fairly decent cable broadband; is my experience normal, or does it sound like I need to tweak a setting somewhere?
thanks

If you go to the debug menu (ctrl+alt+D I think) you can force sunset and that will make it daylight and SL has 3 hr days and 1 hr nights so night never lasts very long to begin with. And the way you download textures sound perfectly normal to me.

That'll make the debug menu apear up the top.. Then go into it, choose world, then force sunset.. LET THERE BE LIGHT! Once you've got the debug menu up once you don't have to do it again unless you re-install SL.. and there is a shortcut for forcing sunset, but I don't know it off the top of my head..

As for question 2 - you might need to play with your settings. It's possible you can be helped by adjusting things a bit - like maybe network and graphics options. Also, you can adjust the night-brightness if you wish.

"Force Sunset" is a misnomer... it should be something like "Force Daylight". That being said, rod, there's also an option for GAMMA in the prefs... look for that and crank it down to make things lighter. Altho, it may get pretty washy, so you can play with monitor controls first and see what transpires. Cheerio!
