I downloaded the new version 1.7. Since then I have logged in a couple of times and each time it says I need to download the update....but it just makes me download the whole new version again. What gives? Why does it keep thinking I do not already have the new version of the software? There is no way to skip it either...you must download it or quit? Help appreciated.

There have been two subsequent updates after 1.7 was released. I just logged in a minute ago and didn't see any request/requirement to update. I'd guess you saw these two update requests.

HI ANDREW Uninstall the SL you currently have. Then, get the newest, newest (which is specifically 1.7.0 (53) as of this writing, even though it doesn't say that on that page!) from here: http://secondlife.com/download/

I didn't realise there had been 2 subsequent updates in the last day or so. Downloaded the latest one and it seems to work. Thanks for your help.
