There isn't a difference anymore. Please ignore the classified that people pay to get onto, and use the events list! It's free and scanned by almost everyone, unlike the classifieds. I think LL should have people like Live Help or Mentors that scan the list and report events that should be taken down.

You know, I'm almost tempted to be completely cynical and drop some overt ads on the events list, but I'd feel insanely slimy afterwards.

COME ON DOWN TO EMERALD FALLS - not event I don't see how this is even hard to determine. Let's empower the Live Helpers and give them the ability to delete all this crap. There are a lot of dummies out there though and it seems clear that some people are thinking that a "sale" is an event, even if the prices are the same as they always are. I would argue that it's not, even if the prices are ineed lower than usual. Several of these cannot posibly be based on such mistaken beliefs though, the posters should be ashamed of themselves. Especially house for sale, cards for sale, and skins for sale. Those are just misrepresentation and missapropriation. Maybe you could post what the Linden definition of an event is though. I would be interested to know what they think an event is. One posible definition is that it isn't an event unless it has a start time and an end time, but then people would post "week long" events (or longer). If you disallow those however, then things like the winter carnival would get shifted out, unless it is listed as discrete events within that time frame. None of that woudl stop people from posting "sales" as events though, unless they are specificlaly dis-allowed. Perhaps the solution is to have a seperate list for non-profit or non-commercial events, (which are the vast majority of the actual real "events" .

Events have a drop down menu for classifying the event, one of those tabs is called "Games".
Doesn't anyone use those tabs? Or know they exist?
I am amazed at the amount of people that complain of wading through that first screen of events that pop up.
Are you looking for an Educational Event? Then click that tab, a Pageant maybe? Click that tab....
It really isn't that hard to do, and if someone posts an event under the correct tab, such as games, it shows up on the screen with all the events unless you specify what you are looking for by clicking the drop down menu.
So now what is the true issue, not enough tabs to cover specific events? People not posting specific events under the correct tab in the drop down menu?
We post under "Games" for our events, SL-ingo is a host driven game and the event page allows us to let people know when it is available for them to play, we don't have it running 24/7.
If people are selling items then there is a Commercial Tab I believe for that, maybe the designer is the host....who knows....Most the time if I am shopping I would rather not be bothered or pressured by sales people thank you, enough of that in RL.
Our Hosts post events on a daily basis and as long as it is there for our use we will keep posting..
Cheers, Clarrice Emerald Falls

There needs to be more categories, at the very least.
I really, really, REALLY can't read through 4 pages of Slingo/Tringo a day to find the one building contest a week. Some of the things people use to "Catch your eye" make me want to stab them in the face.

I'm beginning to wonder if katykiwi is being paid by the non-event throwers to make sure their events get listed in the General section of the forums.

From: Jonquille Noir I'm beginning to wonder if katykiwi is being paid by the non-event throwers to make sure their events get listed in the General section of the forums. Gee I wish they were paying me Jon....but you have seen what I am like when I get a bug up my you know what, and sporadic uneven enforcement of rules really annoys me. The reason this bugs me is there is no predictablility and then we find ourselves facing circumstances where suddenly one member is hit with a TOS/CS sanction for doing the same exact act that another member does without sanction. I know members who were sanctioned in the past for classfied posting abuse that was a lot less pervasive and consistent as are these ads from the same habitual offenders. I dont care which rule LL adapts as much as I do care about predictability and evenhanded enforcement of the rules. Not too long ago I was hit with a TOS/CS warning for allegedly giving out RL information on two members when it was actually another member, their close friend as a matter of fact, who had passed out that specific information to me and others, then blamed me in order to avoid bearing the consequences of her acts. I know with absolute certantly that LL could not and did not investigate this report because I didnt do this. So, I reported that member for passing out that note and many many many others of chats and personal information on the members who ARd me, and the result was uneven enforcement of the rules. So yes, I know Jon, reading these crap ads again on the forum is a drag, but I cant help it when it comes to beign the advocate for evenhanded treatment and enforcement of rules with sufficient consistency that members can enjoy predictability.

Personally i'd like to see everything BUT commercial listings. Maybe toss in a better filter system so you can look at multipul catagories without looking at all of them.

I was just teasing you, katy. I actually agree with you. I give the Event listings a wide berth 90% of the time because of that type of listing, and only check it when there's something specific I need to look for. (Usually, to make sure a regularly scheduled event is still scheduled, and in the same location.) I also tend to avoid listing any real events I have at my place, because it's a store, and I don't want to be lumped in with the used-car-salesmen lot that clutter the event list with ads. I personally avoid those locations like the plague. They're either not smart enough to know what qualifies as a real event, which doesn't give me confidence in their ability to make anything worthwhile, or they're not ethical enough to follow the rules, which makes me want to not buy from them on principle. From: katykiwi Moonflower Gee I wish they were paying me Jon....but you have seen what I am like when I get a bug up my you know what, and sporadic uneven enforcement of rules really annoys me. I kind of liked someone pruning at first, I mean many of the listing are blatantly against the rules. My fear is "blatantly" will still be drawing a line, and anyone just on the wrong side of that line (no matter where drwan) might go dramatic postal worker. If it's the Lindens pruning, TS, if it's LiveHelpers or Mentors or such, well, ugliness.
More categories would be nice, but might turn into a moving target with ads going to the most popular category, or slightly changed listings at slightly different times across categories (though that might be easier to id as event spam). I think more categories would be better regardless, though nto sure it really solves this issue.
I'm assuming pruning will not be done by the Lindens. But if done by LL, there will be drama. Done by SL'ers, even more drama (when done in game as part of Find). Might very well be worth it, I certainly wouldn't complain about either system, but I don't think "blatant" is going to end up as clear as we hope. As for third-party sites, hey, go nuts. Anyone complains, ban 'em, it's the owner's board.

I forgot about the categories when I was trying to figure which of those above was an event and which wasn't so that's a valid criticism of why some of these "events" are on the list, but.... The reason I forgot is that the categories have never worked for me. Typically you look for an event under the category (to give the server a break and make it likely to get a response in under five minutes), and you get nothin. Then you just search the entire list and cruise up and down looking for the event you want. In short, the category feature is so broken I forgot it was there at all. I also agree with others that given the automated nature of the system and the low staffing issue, the easiest line to draw is simply "no commercial events."

we're looking into event moderation possibilities. I agree with a lot of what has been said in this thread but we want to make sure any policies or programs moving forward will be fair and benefit as many residents as possible. I think a 'Commercial' category is legitimate but shouldn't be a repository for listings that belong under the Classifieds.

There is no difference if you're talking about the Events List. It's been little more than an advertisement list for over a year now. After the first couple of months of 1.2, I just quit using it altogether, no skin off my nose. Second Life works just like anything else. If enough of it becomes useless to me, I'll go find something else to do.
