Does this happen to anyone else? After spending several hours making something like hair or a prim dress, I just get a bad headache. :(

Get away from the computer monitor when you get the headache. Also make sure that you're not in a darkened room because you need to light up the area surrounding the monitor.

It's difficult to run away from a project sometimes. Once I start I need to finish. Since I'm always on at night, maybe more light will help.

No one should use a computer monitor (or TV come to that) in a darkened room.

You should take regular breaks where you move away from the computer and make sure you use your eyes to look into the middle and long distance. The advice used to be to take ten minutes every hour away from the computer. Going to get a drink is a good way to achieve this, and ensures you are keeping hydrated which can be another cause of headaches.

Making sure you take regular breaks also ensures that you don't stick in one position, which can cause back problems (don't I know it!) and can cause tension headaches.

I second the hydration advice. I can get pretty fixated on a job and not even notice that I'm hungry or thirsty until I get a terrible headache. If you are in "the zone" while building and don't want to interrupt yourself, get yourself a big old water bottle and keep it on your desk. It really helps!

OR make a weird attachment that allows you to carry your PC around.. some kind of UPS/PC setup backpack keyboard around your neck.. you could be like the one man band of PC users.. I mean yea.. a laptop be nice but this is the 21st century.

The dark room thing has the most extreme headache-causing effects with a CRT monitor vs an LCD monitor. You might want to think about an LCD monitor if you know you'll be sitting in front of it for hours and hours at a time--it doesn't have as good of a refresh (called latency in LCD screens) but it's a lot less likely to induce headaches.

i would have to ad to that: check if your CRT-monitor is interlaced or non-interlaced.
Cause interlaced monitors can actually damage your eyes.

If you're going to seriously work on a computer, ensure a comfortable environment. There must be enough light (no working in the dark), and you need a good keyboard, mouse and monitor.

If you have a CRT, set it to the highest refresh rate possible. Anything below 85Hz isn't good, IMO (this varies though, some people are comfortable with less). Monitors and lights can interfer, in particular fluorescents + CRT == pain. Make sure it's a good monitor, with a clear image and large enough so that you don't need a magnifying glass. In general, look at the corner of your monitor. If you can see it blink, it's not good.

Best of all is a LCD. They don't blink at all, which is perfect, and tend to have a much clearer image than a CRT. Note, LCDs have a refresh period, but this isn't the same as a refresh rate in a CRT. For a CRT low refresh rate means it blinks, for a LCD it means ghosting when things are quickly changing. For a LCD you want a high contrast ratio, and a low refresh period.

Also make sure you have a good mouse and keyboard. Otherwise chances are you'll eventually get some kind of RSI, and that's a really nasty thing. If you feel pain, you need to take a rest, because if you continue it'll only get worse.

If you need something to remind you of taking breaks, check out http://www.workrave.com/ - it tracks elapsed time between breaks, reminds one to take them, displays instruction for various relaxing exercizes to do during a break, can be configured to monitor a maximum computer using time, also has a function for "microbreaks" (ex. 20secs every 5min) which is said to help reduce RSI risk. Very versatile and useful.

Edit: also, if you're building stuff, I would recommend turning particles off if you're not already doing this, the *flash*flash*flash* of the building selection particle trail can be very irritating.

Does it happen only making things or anytime you at the computer a long time.
And what kind of monitor do you have? If its a CRT try increasing the refresh rate.
Right click on the desktop, select properties. Go to Settings tab. Hit Advanced.
Go to the monitor tab... There will be a drop down selection called "Screen refresh rate".
If its avalible try 75 Hertz or higher(try 75ish 1st).. If your screen goes black or funny just wait and it will go back to the old setting.

If you have an LCD(flat screen) you may not have this option.

Personally I can see the screen flicker bellow 70hz-75hz.

Sorry, but this is'nt true. Your aware all TV's except progressive(new HD, etc) are interlaced right? The order of photons hitting you eyes won't break them. but maybe a headache is possible. I agree though, don't run in interlaced modes. I highly doubt you are though, unless you have a super cheep/old monitor that Only has them.
