Hi, I was just wondering if there is a forum for newbies, or what other resources are recommended. Thanks...

There isn't a newbie forum as of yet.. I've asked for one more than once.. But ask your question in the relative forum.. Building, Texture and Design, Techincal Help.. or if you can't find one, general..

Welomce to SL! :D

Frodo, there is also Live Help and there are in-world Mentors, Greeters and Instructors all of whom love nothing more than to teach people about SL. There are forums for all three under the heading of SL Volunteers. Let us know if you would like to meet up with someone to answer your questions...

My questions are more general .. like .. how do I find interesting things to do/see? I found one place only because I saw it mentioned in an article in the NY Times... I just am not sure what even to do once I'm in SL... I guess it'd be helpful to have a group of people to share ideas and experiences with to see what they're doing.... Is it all about shopping and playing games? Sorry, I've been on several times and I'm still feeling a little clueless.

You have to decide what you like to do.. I don't play as much any more.. But I used to love holding events and building.. So I held events (I used to do show and tells and contests mainly), and I built furniture..

Other people get hired to do building or scripting or to hold events, or make clothes.. It all depends on what you enjoy..

Frodo, I'm dropping you 4 notecards of Pathfinder's Picks which are lists of great places to check out in SL. When I was new, I used to look at people's picks in their profiles for ideas of cool places to see. I found a lot of great stuff that way....

Well, in my opinion, Second Life is all about setting your own goals. SL is so open ended, you can really do just about anything you want. If you want SL to be all about shopping and games (as many do, since many people find both activities enjoyable in the real world), then go right ahead!

I, personally, have made it my goal to become a successful businessman. I now own and operate a profitable lotto game, which keeps me busy and entertained. In my spare time, I find it enjoyable to show new residents around the world and help answer any basic questions they have.

What sort of hobbies do you have the real world? Do you like to do computer programming? Fishing? Clubbing? See if you can take what you enjoy in the real world and bring it to SL. :)

Just some suggestions. :)

There is an SL knowledge base here - you can ask a question if you don't find an answer there:

SLuniverse also has a new users forum:

Hi, Frodo (great name, BTW) and welcome to SL!

Among the other great suggestions you have been given, I'd like to invite you to read the Metaverse Messenger each week. It's a free online newspaper that is all about SL, and I am sure that you'll find interesting things in it that you'd like to check out.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions! I was wondering why those notecards suddenly appeared. Those have a lot of cool suggestions in them.

I guess I'm interested in just checking out cool things people have built here, looking for ways to just relax, see some interesting things, chill out, and meet interesting people. But I'll keep looking around and exploring, and maybe do a class for newbies if I find one. Thanks for all the suggestions!
