I ask because I've already spent eleven of them wandering around aimlessly Nice environment though, and some interesting shops! Albion

Then start sorting all the things you found! Sorting is very important, else your inventory will look like mine! And, trust me, when it gets that bad you'll need a lot more than 12 hours to fix it.

Then start sorting all the things you found! I haven't been to any of those. I've an hour left! Thanks for the pointers. When I told my 1st life partner what I put in my message she said that it sounded like the real world. Albion

I spent an hour sorting mine last night and still have crap all over, and I constantly find things in the wrong folder. Like finding a gun in my "Turbo Dong XXX" folder was fun. I'm just glad it didn't go off x.x

Thats ok, I thought I could get away with one meta folder when I first started called "My Shit" 4000 items later and that folder is waaay dead.

First of all welcome to Second Life, I totally understand your dilemma. Since I'm just learning the basics of building, skins and shapes (and stuff!), I often find I want something more mindless to do than flip back and forth between Photoshop, Poser and SL for hours on end. Since in addition my boyfriend is cutting my hair allowance if I don't earn money soon (ooooh nooos!) I'm even more devoted to slacking off cause it makes him so cute when he's lecturing me.
So here are some ideas to spend time in SL with:
Type in a random word for example: Haunted (this does not have to be associated with shopping) and visit all the entries you find. (Using the word the will just be for crazy making)
Go to a highly populated place. (You can select popular places on your map) Pick one or two interesting looking people to check their profile. Then go to each place listed in the "Picks"
Go to "The Ivory Tower"- you can learn just about anything you want to know about building, prims, objects, etcetera there. Plus generally the people there are just plain nice.

I'm down to 12,000 items from around 30,000, and 75% of it is still unsorted, I've contemplated trashing everything but 2 hairstyles, a skin and 2 outfits and starting over. So please sort as you go or you'll end up as nuts as the rest of us.

Hi Daequix thanks. Oddly enough I've just arrived at The Ivory Tower for the first time. I'm probably more interested in the less 'mindless' stuff ultimately anyway. Making textures and building, maybe selling paintings. I have a 1st life arts background so look forward to being creative. I probably intend becoming a premium member eventually, is it worth doing that at this early stage? Will I get more out of SL immediately being a premium member?

Albion I don't think you'll get any immediate satisfaction from becoming a Premium member instantly. I think it's best to learn the ropes, THEN go Premium.

Albion Hmm, well for me I went premium pretty quickly after starting SL, but probably because I sooo wanted to own land, then bought it and didn't know what to do with it other than litter it with googaws and such. I am a novice in terms of the creative side but learning quickly. Since the original land purchase, we (my group and myself) have moved into bigger land holdings and are developing stores and themed items. While at the Ivory Tower, if you see Lumiere there (you'll recognize him by his Spy vs Spy outfit usually) he's a great resource for info and such...he can wrangle a prim like no other. Since you are interested in the creative aspects, Lum also sponsers contests for builders (Search for Edifice Rex - not sure of the spelling) the latest of which will be a vehicle contest running or non running and avatar contest. Feel free to look me up, my boyfriend Solivar Scarborough or our friends/partners Gadget Gobo and Doyen Darling if you want a chat or help with anything. Dae

All I did in the first twelve hours was just fly around the place looking at all the stores and neat places with things to do. Really.. who goes straight to the ivory tower? I got there after a week of exploring. I agree with the newbie stores though. Getting stuff in SL is part of the fun and you can get a lot of stuff for free when you first start. I'd say enjoy yourself in your newbie-ness and take your time. SL will still be there when you log in later.

Well, Solivar, my guy, (who is also an artist in RL) was at the Ivory Tower within a few hours of our starting in SL. On Help Island he was twisting and turning prims so rapidly I was worried he'd give someone a concussion. I, on the other hand, was trying to steal hair off the head of one of the mentors cause....it was pretty and I had to have it. We each have our own personal urges. Mine was shopping and hair, his was making stuff. So, honestly to each their own....as I was reminded quite often my first whiney days here, this world is ours for the making. Dae

And be sure to keep looking. Esspecially for skins or anything else relitively expensive. Most skinners are decent, but there are some out there to jsut take people. Instance is when I saw a 20,000L$ skin for sale. Pics of it looked like it was the original skin at avie creation. With skins, in my opinion, if they don't have a demo to try, they aren't worth buying from. After that, Search is nice to find intrests you already have. Talking with others can find you more. I also encourage driving along the roads. You find all sorts of neat things this way. Welcome, and best of luck. ~Jessy
