maybe if we had come up with a good implementation of the voting tool in the first place, we wouldn't have to deal with how insufficient it is for our needs.

Here was me speaking up - and I know there were a host of other people who also did at the time.

New Voting System - more concerns

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would love to see the new feature voting system get polished in a way to best serve the community and Linden Lab. In that light, I offer concerns and suggestions to improve the system:

Feature Voting has MAJOR flaws

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am against the current implementation of the SL Feature Voting system. I love the idea of it and how LL plans to implement per votes, however I believe the implementation has major flaws.

1. Ballot stacking with alts.
We already have people abusing 1st land, griefing, and avoiding banishments using alts. This would be another way alts would give undue power.

2. Controversial issues are misrepresented.
What if 51% of the SL community feels an issue is good, and 49% hate it? The proposal would get a lot of votes, however there lacks any way for people to vote negatively.

3. Suggestions should not be limited.
Make proposals free. There also needs to be a duplicate checker and a search tool, as well as a moderator who consolodates duplicates. I personally have suggested dozens of things for SL, and would hate to think I am capped to 10, ever.

I would suggest the alternative:

- Add a ranking system 1-5, and let people vote as much as they want.
- Let votes be tied to credit cards, not by accounts.
- Make proposals free.
- Add a search tool for users to easily find suggestions.
- Moderate suggestions for duplicates.

Otherwise, I like the idea and I like the mechanism of LL responding with whether it can be done and whether it will be worked on - this has been something that I and others have asked for and are glad to have.

I can't even find the link to votes anymore - but I hope they ran with prop 811... it just makes sense!

**EDIT** never mind I found it!

Because it's wrong

He's complaining that votes aren't getting returned when the proposal becomes in developement?

I am complaining because "if a proposal is marked "can't do", "acknowledged", or is deleted - all votes will be returned to those who have voted on it." - and it is simply not being done. Hell, P2P Teleporting is still sitting there with only an acknowledged - it was never even given an in developement or completed.

When I stopped counting there was around 10,000 votes that have not been returned to voters. That is the full voteing power of 1,000 players.

The Lindens point to this "tool" when asked various questions about why this or that has not been done. They tell us to use it, and they will listen. If they are not even paying enough attention to it to impliment basic maintance, then how can they say they are using it as a tool to give us, the players, what we want the most?

That is just wrong, and I felt motivated enough this evening when I checked my votes to say just that.

The voting page is just a quasidemocratic lobbying tool meant to replace forum shouting (like this thread) with something that provides a larger quantifiable sample. Because the votes are nonbinding, it's really irrelevant whether it's fastidiously maintained or not. Additionally, the Lindens must balance the direction SL takes between what the clueless users want (democracy) and what those who have advanced skills in the corporation want (meritocracy). In summary, when they want to listen again, it will be updated and you will be notified.

I'm all for breaking loops. While I think "worthless" is a strong word, one I wouldn't personally use, I can see a degree of latency in the voting tool. It's kinda like you send an email to someone and it takes, well, the same speed as snail mail. Or voting with a paper ballot. ;) In other words, we have a situation where the message isn't being fully embraced by the medium (and vice-versa).

Basic maintenance? Some simple caretaking to keep the fields fresh? Sure, I'm for that. :)

I can see this being a problem is votes were bound to a proposal, but thats not the case. At anytime, people can remove their votes and place them elsewhere, so its not like those votes are gone or are going to waste.

I think its rather usefull still - when someone who just comes to SL and says in the forums - "I think Av's should poop every 3 hours " you can link them to the abandoned proposal, rather than just say 'STFU NOOB!'

The brilliant thing is that if anyone disagrees with me, I'd point out that they were demonstrating their desire to have a no vote. :)
