SL gets props from Information Week in an article titled "Open Doors To Innovation." Not much we didn't know here, but it talks about how LL used Open Source software as the underlying architecture for the grid.

"In the past, the sticker shock of buying and managing the 1,400 CPUs and associated software needed to power this rapidly expanding massive multiplayer online game would have been enough to curb the enthusiasm of even the best-funded startup."

This is a nice article focusing more on the technical side. Thanx for sharing it, Satch. One passage which seems... er... technically inaccurate is this tho:

From: ARTICLE
Linden Lab, a privately held company with 31 employees that's a subsidiary of Linden Research Inc., and other small, growing companies are the perfect candidates to pioneer the use of open source.

Emphasis mine added.

"Linden Lab, a privately held company with 31 employees that's a subsidiary of Linden Research Inc."

A subsidiary? huh. That's interesting.

What else are they doing?

IIRC, Linden Research's original task was to design virtual reality peripherals.

The purpose of Second Life was to create a virtual reality to use those peripherals with.
