Bel's a visionary. The SL Forums archives should be kept for future generations to learn from.
I miss Bel, hope she'll come back to SL soon. _____________________

Thing is, all the stuff about "Second Life is a platform" rings a bit hollow to me.
Most of the stuff SL can do "as a platform" can be done better outside SL. In other words, there's no reason to be part of SL unless you enjoy it for the sake of - and the entertainment value of - being part of SL. If people didn't care about SL for its own sake, who'd care about your LindenScript coded FPS, over just playing Quake or whatever? If people didn't care about SL for its own sake, who'd care about how their SL avatar looked? A platform usually is something that gets used for the things it supports. You don't decide "oo, I feel like using Windows for a bit now". Second Life isn't like that. You use it because being in Second Life as fun. And thus being something that depends on entertainment value, it's a game ![]() |

But nothing does it all... except Second Life. _____________________

"All" is pretty optimistic for SL.
Anyone have time to search the archives for the first time SL was referred to as a chat system, a game, and the first time that Philip said that SL wasn't a game? |

For a sufficiently narrow definition of better... yes. I'd like to see you get a MMORPG going in a week without something very much like SL ![]() Besides... havent you heard of wells fargo and stagecoach island. All of those people enjoyed "SL" without even knowing it exists. _____________________

-cough-
When was the first time SL was mentioned as a thoroughly integrated combination of community and platform? Because that's its appeal; otherwise, Yumi is correct. The idea of a "platform embedded within a leveled community" is the crucial factor that often gets lost in these sorts of discussions. _____________________

There is a local dairy a short distance from my house. It does the the best job of providing me with fresh dairy products in an efficient manner. There is nothing like the smell of fresh baked bread from the bakery. I like the little hardware store and its helpful employees, too. The post office has those handy vending machines for stamps, now; no more lines. The guys at the local party store are friendly and know my brand of gin. I'm enjoying a little snack of cider and doughnuts from a cidermill not a half mile from my house right now. Specialty shops just do a better job of providing a product or service. But the fastest way I can find myself back home with my feet up and enjoying my Tanqueray & Tonic is to make one stop at the superstore. Not to mention it's open 24 hours.
The internet is a very efficient way for me to do so many things. The more things I can do in one place, the more things I can do period. Understand the usage and address the needs of the cocooners and the game will then become the platform. Cocooning is not a trend, it is the direction more and more of society is headed. There is still a need to connect, to be a part of a community. |
