It has supposedly been a feature in development for a long time - there is an entire thread with feedback about it somewhere around here. No one knows for sure when they will offer it though. The only way you can get a custom last name right now is if you form a company (a la the ACS last night for Anshe Chung Studios employees) or you are a pseudo-celebrity (such as Joi Ito). Otherwise, you are still stuck with the selections available.

Yeah just seems like I've been hearing about it for a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time. I'm not sure what the issues would even be on the LL side, just wanted my wife to have my last name but my last name has been retired Though I never understood why ya can't make one up, when you first create your avi, like ya can in every other mmorpg I've ever played... Thanks for the great responses and links LOVE the SL community!!!

It was wildly unpopular, as older asshats feel they've 'earned' their names.

I actually like the system the way it is. It is like a funny little social push.
It made me think about my SL character and realationships differently. Having to adopt a different surname made me think outside the box.

I agree with you Whimsycallie - I have 'cousins' who i wouldn't know except we both said "hey, same last name", and with some of them, i've become good friends. some of them set me on fire twice though, those are the hicks of the family.

I like it too.. as time goes by you'll find less and less people with your last name.. which is kinda cool I dont agree either that names like midnight and protagonist/omega ect be recirculated. time will come when we have vintage names too ;D

I mean really... why not??? EVERY other mmorpg you can have any name ya want and I've yet to see any names that are remotely alike when ppl name themselves. I like my last name, Deckard, just wanted my wife to have it too and got to wondering is all; though the reason as to why you can't name yourself anything has always baffled me. I'm not proposing one over the other, heck implement both like they do with avi shapes. You can go random and go with the SL decided/default shape or ya can shape yourself. For a game that is about complete freedom of imagination and granting the abilities to implement those extreme decisions the not being able to change your name thing is weird. And now I want answers!!! LOL! Why LL? WHY?!?

When I saw that my RL last name was finally available, I jumped to create a new alternate account. At the time, we were only allowed one alts per email address, so I missed out.
I found out that we aren't limited when it comes to alts now, but the last name 'Barrett' is now out of circulation. I'm really disappointed.

I managed to get both my maiden name and something approximating my married name.
I am quite pleased.
