How soon until new hardware is required to run SL?

Some of you folks have been around SL and dealt with LL long enough that I thought I would ask this question :D

Does LL give fair warning when the Minimum System Requirements will be changing?

I figure since it's inception, they have changed a few times. Anyone remember the last time...?

When this happened, did you have time to purchase upgrades before the change, or were you locked out of the system for a while until you did?

Just thinking ahead... ;)

The only time I can remember the system requirements changing is when they dropped support for folks using integrated graphics cards. Other than that it's been the same since 2003.

Hi Jaycatt!

I am a newbie, and I think they should up the minimum requirements while still making it possible for those who don't meet them to connect (if even for a while). My old machine exceeded the minimum specs, but there was stutter, lag, and frequent crashes. I went ahead and bought a new system and it's a totally different experience now. Upping the minimum may stop more people from being disappointed when their supposed spec-meeting computer does not run SL smoothly.

They give no warning at all. One day, you'll download an update, and it won't let you in. You'll go to the forums and/or the requirements page, and find that you are now below the bottom of 'acceptable'. Time to upgrade or buy a new system. *sigh*

I fear that with every update that includes major new graphics whizz-bangs, because I am on a Mac Mini - right at the bottom of 'acceptable' as far as video capabilities go, and impossible to upgrade short of buying a new computer. And I can't afford a new computer just to play SL...

Lordfly? The minimum requirements changed at least once since last September. When the expanded it to a bare minumum and a recommended level. At that point my system dropped from 'recommended' to 'well, you can lauch the client and it doesn't crash instantly...'.

That is a pretty good idea, especially for those just starting out. However, I have a friend who is concerned every time there is an update, because that could be the one that makes them no longer able to play since they don't have the money for upgrades.

Um... TBH, in was always at the bottom of that list, right?
Well... get a dremel tool and stuff a bigger card in, those little boxes are upgradable, right?
