Does anyone know much about "peer review"? - Who are the "peers" and what do they "review"?

Shush! We're not supposed to talk about it. It'll get into a whole big mess about politics, courts, judges and juries, the failings of the AR system, player governments and worse. Now you really don't want that, do you?

Seriously Does peer review ever lead to anything but permabanning? And if not, then what's the point? Is there extenuating circumstances that make the review process valid? Or is it just some psychological mechanism to make the fleshbots feel morally fastidious? And why capitol punishment? - why not an exile sim?

peers means a randomly selected group of your peers. I've taken part in one peer review. I was given the facts of the case and the disciplinary history of the avatar (but not their name or any identifying information) and asked for my opinion on whether they should be permabanned or not. I that case the person had a long history of harassment... mostly racial. I voted to toss them out on their sorry ass.

I've been invited once in my two years here, but got the email too late...it was during SLCC planning and I was a bit distracted.

They select a few "random" people and give them a slanted rundown of your disciplinary history and present them with this: They do not present you with facts. They do not present you with evidence. They do not let the person defend themselves. They say, in such and such month, we banned this person for this reason. That's it. All this expulsion nonsense is just for show anyway. Our script-stealing friend has been back in Second Life for quite some time. I turned him in. They changed his name from "Douche" to "Doug". (edit: I forgot to mention that he was also permabanned months before the script thefts, too.) The guy who took down the whole grid was also back in the next day. They don't care.

From: Masakazu Kojima They don't care. The question is: what is the point of punishment? If the point is to get the person to stop commiting the "crime", then the goal has been reached. Obviously, the grid hasn't gone down again since Black Sunday, so what's the problem? Personally, I don't mind if LL lets him back in, as long as he doesn't continue his griefing ways... if he DOES, then it's time for more proactive measures. Personally, I think everyone deserves a second chance, unless the danger is simply too great to risk that second chance... in real life, we have the same basic philosophy: criminal justice is supposed to be about reforming the criminal, rather than simply punishing them.

Specifics

SO - I'd asked about this (PEER REVIEW) while thinkng about a very specific case which was resolved by PEER REVIEW today. It was RE: Ryerro Rocco/Ishii Rocco/Silvio Rocco/SLie Fox/Lao Ming/Rogue Gorilla (all the same person) This person was running from 4 to 6 av's at one time (!!!!???!!!) They were my pals and did minimal harm to the landscape - usually of the renegade justice type of thing. They got the PERMABAN. Web justice reminds me of the old west - lynching style. Goodbye friends. FROM SL Dear Sir, After investigating your accounts, the decision has been made to permanently close them. Disciplinary problems have prompted this decision. You will receive a formal letter by registered mail with further information regarding this decision. In the meantime, please direct all questions regarding your accounts to: abuse-manager@lindenlab.com. Thank you. Linden Lab Support Second Life Support Linden Lab 1100 Sansome Street San Francisco, CA 94111) TO SL: ( Dear SL, You are stoopid. I already have other accounts and am bothering ppl. U think you are god - but you are more like poop. (stinky and annoying and prevelant) I laugh at you and I hope you get outdone by smarter ppl. (you know you will - cuz you are stoopid and sad.) I laugh and I think you are like Texas. Your Palz, Ryerro/Ishii/SLie/Silvio/Rogue/Lao ) dramaramaringdingdo - you can't kill ppl if they aren't ready to die <3 <3 <3
