After a long time I checked out Chromal Brodsky's Second Life population statistics page again. Looking at it I would say, we have a fair chance of hitting 10,000 concurrent users this weekend.
While this is just a number, I think it will be a not too unimportant milestone for Second Life. Most of the other numbers indicating population and growth of SL are debateable (and are debated heavily). The growth of concurrent users online seems to be a fairly good growth indicator, a kind of lower limit for any kind of growth predictions.
(btw: if you smooth out this curve, you can see that the number of concurrent users doubles in less than 6 months currently - roughly equivalent to a monthly growth rate of more than 12 %.)

I don't need a graph, I can tell from the asset server.

Are you taking side bets on the asset server grinding to a halt or a grid crash?

From: Alazarin Mondrian Are you taking side bets on the asset server grinding to a halt or a grid crash? No side bets like that. I am a (Prokofy certified) Linden fan boy! While I sympathize with all those who sometimes suffer from the poor performance of SL as a whole and the asset server in special, all the whining about poor performance is perfectly "normal" - meaning: it will always be like that. I heard it, when I came to SL, I heard it after half a year and it is prevelant today. Honestly: subjectively judging from own experience asset server has been better sometime, sometime it was much worse. Remember last autumn - the season of the gray goo? I don't see why the asset server should perform worse with 10,000 users than with 9,000 - or with 5,000 users.

*Throws in a few more alts* We should plan a party some night. With a little advertizing we could easly push that number up.

Little sidenote: at the current growth rate SL will reach 20,000 concurrent users sometime in Feb/Mar 2007 and 100,000 concurrent users in April 2008. Geometric growth sure is funny.
