As someone who never lived through "the good old days" of SL (so called), I am curious to see what timeframe (dates) the old-timers consider this era. I consider myself having been born in the "Era of Commerce" in Secondlife... my birthdate is 2/15/05.

you've no idea.
Come back to Dec 03, we the wrote book. You've experienced a level of descent based on nothing more than 'pop-idols' ideals. Others wrote the wave you now ride upon, we lived the recourse of the 5000-7000 replies. The hatred of the personal phone calls, the savage blow of the tallest poppy. Fizik and the avalon crew. p.s. Still doing it, creating real products, dealing with the potential of the virtual world from a real perspective - shame on you! You talk about the the new era, while others around you create it - joke. fizik and the 50+ ppl on avalon. crew. _____________________

I joined back in Jan 04 I believe..
Ya know the squeaky slime, sitting on the rail in the welcome area, all fully terraformable SIM days. Back when actual Lindens were in the Welcome area hanging out with us.. I miss seeing the Lindens especially Jeff and his weird matrix skin.. *I still don't think he's wearing pants* |

Ahh yes, the good old days, back on the boardwalk, with the balloon tour balloon sitting on its platform. The telehub up overhead, the people appearing up on it's platform and jumping off to land Spat! on the boardwalk below. Jeff Linden, Jill Linden, Lee, Char dropping by. Teeny Leviathan, Toy LaFollete, Loci Pico, Hank Ramos, Trimming Hedges, chatting. Learning to build in Morris or Cordova, no Goguen or Newcomb or Sandbox Island. Few enough sims that one might know the names of all of them. Show and Tell at Stage IV, the announcement dialogs poping up to tell us what the next event would be, event hosts dropping by the round Ahern end of the boardwalk to stoke the crowd in advance of their event. Yadni Monde amazing the chatters by appearing in a big dragon avatar. Running around the edge of Cordova for no good reason, just enjoying the virtual ability to run around a nearly vertical surface. Having to fly everywhere, flying from the WA to Cordova, no P2P teleport and no telehub down by Cordova. Learning the rudiments of scripting. Getting perplexed by the single prim door that opens like an iris as you approach, without a script.

Having to fly everywhere I heard there were 6-foot snowdrifts too! Wasn't late 2004-early 2005 the "FIC revolt"? _____________________

"Good old days" is a myth, regardless of the particular subject in question, based on the views through mist-shrouded pasts viewed with rose-colored glasses.

Generally people refer to the pre-1.2 world (2002-2003).
Before GOM came and allowed people to make real money off SL, bringing in a horde of exploiters who were neither nice nor talented. Gotta love a place where you can own a whole sim for $14.95 a month ![]() _____________________

I liked how it seemed like everyone was involved in the Olde days. It just felt like everyone was doing something. There are a lot of people who seem to have just stumbled into SL these days. It's just a different vibe. Not that I think things used to be better, but change is always a tradeoff.

I came along in v1.5.0 (i think) back in october of 2004. At that time we didnt have a lot of the things we have now. I wasnt around in 2003 but i have collected maps from yadni's junkyard that showed what the grid looked like. I was wowed... To think the grid started out as a small handful of sims and turned into what it is now. O.O
I would have killed to have known about SL back then, but sadly i was a Furcadian, Evercracker, Anarchy Online nut back then. I would have liked to be a part of the beginning, but thats cuz I love to beta test things. I would have loved to have came to SL when terrain was flat and untextured, and we had the old GUI (greenie). Perhaps one day the SL GUI will be customizable and allow us to bring that back for ourselves. ![]() Well we don't ALL have to have been charter members to say were oldbies... I consider myself one. In 3 years from now all you people just now making your accounts will be oldbies too. Then you can sit in your rocking chair and tell the newbies about the good old days when we didnt have flexable prims and outer space / zero g sims. XD _____________________

Well before my time, rezzing a prim costed $1L, during my time you weer given linden based on your rating, which did cost $1L, oh yeah and SL wasn't free for a basic account, you had to pay $9.95... there wasn't P2P Teleporting and I think the abilitiy to buy sims had just began....

Weren't people so poor back then, they had to hide prims under their floorboards? If you could hoarde prims then you had money since it cost $10L for each prim rezzed. I hid about 2000 prims at my place in Hawthorne before being turned out on the forums Briana Dawson |
