I just had a visitor, didnt bother to come and chat, just wandered around, ok thinks I, that's cool. After a while he comes closer and I caught the spam issuing from his "Wizards Staff", seemed it was scripted object, blatantly copying my latest build, making lists of prim parameters !
At the very least he could have chatted to me!
Now he's found himself ejected and banned from my land.
Not that it will stop a determined copier but hey the cheek!

From: Laukosargas Svarog caught the spam issuing from his "Wizards Staff" Interesting but puzzling. A script can read parameter settings of nearby objects belonging to others? Never thought about it, but I don't see how. And "spam" ? You mean parameters were being transmitted as text on the chat channel ? Sounds insane - why would such an item, assuming it exists, do that ? This story seems at first to be doubly ridiculous. But what do I know? Anybody able to explain ?

But what do I know? Anybody able to explain ? Actually, I think we actually have enough tools now that it could be done, with some extremely complicated scripts; things like factoring llGetMass() with llGetBoundingBox() ratio's, or using miniture volumedetected 'probes' to get a voxelmap. But, I doubt that was the case here. -Adam

Whether you think it's ridiculous or not I dont care a hoot.
And yes spamming chat is not very clever but there it was.
And as a scripter I know a list of coordinates when I see them.
[edit] I'll add I also know that it woud be difficult to copy other owners objects, but wouldnt you get extremely suspicious of someone with edit particles in your build and a scripted object spamming coords and vectors ? Someone who doesnt talk when you say hi ?

The thread title reminded me of one in Land & Economy causing me to think, "Two threads about cheap astroturf in the same day? How odd."

for the education of the suspicious poster above,
llDetectedPos llDetectedRot
both provide meaningful results in a scanner, it's not so easy to get other params. maybe this dude is experimenting. I don't really care, he should have at least talked.

Lauk I swear one day you should have a magic button that turns Lauk's Nest into Lauk's Crib. You could be totally ghetto (with those wings) and PWN a copycat for knockin' off ya goodz! I have this mental image of a music video where you turn up the heat and get out your own magical powers, and totally break the "Wizards Staff" in two. Little Harry Potterimpersonator bows to the true mastah!!! (Kind of like the end of Kung-Fu Hustle if you've ever seen that.)

It is my understanding that a conversation generally needs two people...perhaps instead of twitching towards the eject button, you should have taken the initiative and tried talking to him yourself? Perhaps a "jolly good chap, that fine mages stick appears to be quite the yapper, wherefore does it jabber thusly?". Or something to that effect. - Newfie

- Newfie WTF ? I said hello to the guy please at least take the trouble to read posts before you flame them. Too many people around here seem to want to troll and flame without actually reading what was said. How can anything be "your understanding" if you don't comprehend what's being talked about ? Don't bother replying that was a rhetorical question and this thread is over afaic.

And you *still* didn't respond to my point about at least attempting to find out what they were doing. So far all I've seen is a petty attempt by someone to form a rant about someone with a scripted item spouting out coordinates and rotations, at the very least implying that said person was attempting to steal one's work. Next time, book the bad attitude and yell at your dollie if you have a problem. But if you're going to bring it into the forum threads, expect people with at least a double-digit IQ providing a response. This reminds me of when I was a newbie. One of the first things I tried to make was a wizards staff. I tried to adapt Ama Omegas particle script, adding timers and such. But not really understanding how the script worked or LSL I left in all the list generation stuff and in fact had it inside the timer lol. The result was a staff which spammed a lot of vectors in a list in chat every few seconds. but the staff did look pretty.
Also thinking back, around that time I was very inquisitive to inspect everything around me and wasnt particularly talkative unless spoken too. Even when people did speek to me I often didnt notice them... In fact I still have that problem.
Is it possible that this incident was as innocuous at core as that?

I tend to agree with Jim.
one of my tricks during debugging is to either spam myself with coordinates (or other variables) or to use llSetText to show debug information.
He was probably new and just curious. Since text fades quickly from the screen, he probably didn't even see your simple "hello".

I got a Wizard's Staff from a box of freebies yesterday. It Whispered a bunch of numbers to me (I'm still too new to know what they were). Could be that the person you saw got the same staff and was just as confused about what the numbers even meant.

There are many many reasons for his behavior. I think 'veterans' are starting to feel the disparity between them and 'newbies'd
It happens in every environment, ive been here forever, ive contributed x amount of content/worth to the world, therefore everyone who isn't of my level is either clueless, hacking, immature, or all three.
you should remove the ban, IM him and invite him back, get to know him, who knows you could end up best friends and teach him some of your eliteness.
or
he'll ignore you again .. but at least you will have an educated opinion.

- Newfie ROFLMAO gimme a break........tell me...if some strange person walked into your house in rw.....started picking up your things and looking at them without even speaking to you.....would you feel it was your responsibility to start a friendly chat?? lmao methinks you'd be dialing 911 before the person could get to the second room for inspection. One is not required to be a *good host/hostess* to rude, uninvited people who think they can randomly enter your home and diddle with your belongings...(much less whatever attempt may or may not have been made to rip off numbers)....either in rw or iw. News flash! Good manners are not just a rw requirement......although i do think the concept has eluded many lol

News flash! Good manners are not just a rw requirement......although i do think the concept has eluded many lol But this isn't RL... By the time your old enough to go out on your own, you know its wrong to wander into peoples houses.. In SL you don't have growing up time.. They don't know who owns the house, they don't know if someone lives there, and they don't know that some people might not like them being there.. I know I didn't.. I should think I walked through a few houses before I thought about people not liking it.. As for it spamming, I very much doubt it was copying the parametres.. If they had a complex enough script to copy parametres, I doubt you'd leave it spamming in main chat.. I would think its much more likely the script wasn't written properly or it was melfunctioning.. I've had many an attachment (mainly prim drinnks), that spam their co-ords when they don't work.. I visited a LiveHelp call yesterday, when someone landed on their roof when they had limit access on.. I think the most annoying thing they found was him not replying.. Which I find too.. Someone on LiveHelp yesterday kept asking questions and then not replying.. They probably didn't know how to check when someone had sent you an IM.. Anyway, I wouldn't worry

agreed...that part i do understand......and believe me, when this type of situation happens to me, the first thing i do is pull up profile to check the sl bday. i'm a champion of noobs and always do my best to help when i can. But believe me, when i tell you how many well beyond the noob stage do this kind of thing. And as far as being a noob, the first thing i learned was how to type/talk in game. and i figured it out on my own because the CHAT button was pretty self explanatory. The least someone can attempt to do is speak. i've had noobs happen onto my prop (on purpose or by accident lol) and they were at least polite enough to not only speak, but to ASK if it was okay that they were there and/or apologize if they intruded.
